Billy Butcher

Billy Butcher runs The Boys: a small, unofficial cell that polices Supes because no institution will. He recruits Hughie Campbell in the pilot, plants the listening device at Seven Tower, and sets the pattern the whole series follows — improvise, escalate, and never ask permission.

His method is the point. He and Frenchie learn Translucent's internal organs are still vulnerable beneath indestructible skin, then weaponise that. He bargains his way toward Becca, agreeing to deliver the captured Supe-terrorist to Grace Mallory in exchange for her location. The show keeps stripping away whatever cover he had: by Season 3 the Boys are contractors for the Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs with Hughie as liaison, and Butcher takes Temp V, survives being shot, and gains durability and heat vision — then immediately uses it to kill Gunpowder after extracting information.

What has happened since makes him a liability even to his own side. In Season 4 he refuses to use the Red River information against Neuman, but also tells Ryan the truth about his own condition — roughly six months to live after his V24 use — and M.M. formally dismisses him for the illness and the insubordination. Fired, he still turns up to end the Splinter threat. In Season 5 he returns once Sage leaks the execution order, reuniting with Annie and Kimiko to lead the camp rescue through a passage opened by Worm, while the lab he runs with Dr. Sameer Shah is held together by his lie about Victoria Neuman's death.

Billy Butcher is a former SAS operator from the East End of London who declares one-man war on the superhero industry after his wife Becca is raped by Homelander and vanishes. He is the show's engine of rage: funny, fearless and utterly without limits, the man who will strap a bomb to a baby-supe or feed a teammate unstable Compound V if it moves him one inch closer to Homelander's throat.

His tragedy is that hatred keeps him alive and destroys everything he touches. The Boys - Hughie, Mother's Milk, Frenchie, Kimiko - are the family he builds out of other people's grudges, and he betrays, lies to and endangers every one of them in the name of the mission.

Facing a terminal diagnosis from his own experimental doses of Temp-V, Butcher's war turns inward: the drug gives him powers and, in its side effects, something monstrous stirring inside him. His obsession with Ryan - Becca's son, Homelander's boy - becomes the last honest thing about him, and the series' endgame question is whether Butcher dies as Ryan's protector or as the second coming of the thing he hates.

• Supe-hating vigilante
• Tactical ruthlessness
• Charismatic leadership
• Temp-V powers (super strength and durability)
• Self-destructive obsession

deuteragonist

Butcher's defining love is Becca, his wife, whose fate at Homelander's hands defines him; his defining war is with Homelander himself. Hughie Campbell is his recruit, conscience and punching bag - the partnership begins as manipulation and becomes something like loyalty. Frenchie and Kimiko are his weapons and, eventually, his casualties of conscience. Ryan is the fault line: the child of his enemy carrying his wife's gentleness, and Butcher cannot decide whether he is protecting the boy or hunting him.
