The Boys Season 4 Episode 2: Life Among the Septics

The Boys' surveillance pays off a lead at a time: they track Sage to TruthCon, where she is sizing up recruits — she assesses Firecracker as a potential Seven member, and Firecracker walks away with an assignment: eliminating the CIA agents at the event.

Inside the Seven's orbit, A-Train quietly switches sides for the first time: he gives Hughie and Annie security footage that clears the Starlighters who were framed for the murders of three Homelander supporters.

Ryan's coming-out as a hero turns fatal. His staged public rescue collapses when Homelander's arrival disrupts him, and Ryan throws the stunt performer with superhuman force — killing him, and leaving Ryan traumatized by what he did.

At TruthCon itself, the fight turns on Splinter's multiplying clones — until Butcher, arriving in defiance of MM's order, kills the original Splinter and ends the threat. The victory buys him nothing: MM formally dismisses Butcher from the team after learning of his illness and continued insubordination.

The episode's other family rupture belongs to Hughie: his estranged mother Daphne reveals she holds power of attorney and that Hugh Sr. signed a DNR, and Hughie challenges her exclusion of him from his own father's medical decisions.

The episode's closing beat centers on MM's refusal to reverse his decision after the TruthCon fight, leaving Butcher off the team even though he helped kill Splinter. The retrieval of the footage and the elimination of Splinter may have stabilized the immediate situation, but MM maintains the boundary he set after learning about Butcher's illness and continued insubordination. That leaves several threads unresolved: whether A-Train will fully break with Homelander, how Ryan will react to the accidental death during the staged rescue, and what will happen with Hugh Sr.'s medical care. The ending does not resolve those questions; it closes on the consequence of MM's leadership decision rather than a reversal.
