Character Biography

Biography

Pete Chin is a medical examiner whose work sits at the evidentiary center of Will Trent's fourth season, played by Kurt Yue. He first appears in Season 2 and is credited across Seasons 2, 3, and 4 — twenty-eight credited appearances in all, seventeen of them in Season 4 alone, where his findings repeatedly decide what the team's cases even are.

His Season 4 work begins at the burned-out scene of the two-part premiere. With everything at the scene pointing to a murder-suicide involving Will Trent and the serial killer James Ulster, Pete cannot make an official call — and his inability to close the question is what allows Angie to keep looking, reading the flip phone fused to the passenger's chest and knowing the body is not Will's. The scene was staged. Pete's caution at the scene is the hinge the whole premiere turns on.

From there his reports carry the season's cases forward. When salsa dancer Catalina collapses dead on the floor of a club, Pete and Trent agree she was poisoned — the poison turns out to have been in her makeup, which belonged to Roxy, the real intended target. When a woman is found exsanguinated with neck punctures at the center of a red pentagram at a drive-in, Pete reports she overdosed on a fentanyl patch before being drained, redirecting a case that looked occult toward the people around the victim. In the fraternity case, Pete's findings push the investigation back a year: gold speckles from Golderkranz drinks, and a kid who died after a wild DK party about a year earlier. His exhumation of Barry Evers — dead of staged hypothermia, mouth taped shut, gold flakes in his stomach — converts a campus cover-up into a murder case.

The season's most consequential autopsy is Amanda Wagner's. Pete's report establishes that Amanda did not suffer long — the stab wounds were fatal, but she collected enough DNA under her fingernails to identify her killer: one of Adelaide's followers, a school teacher. And in the premiere's aftermath hour he is again the man who cannot answer: Angie finds Ethan's body missing from the morgue, which Pete has just returned from court to discover gone.

Across the season Pete is written the way medical examiners mostly are on television at their best: the person whose patience with a body sets the limit on everyone else's theories. He does not chase suspects or run stings; he tells the team what the dead can support — a poisoning, a staged overdose, a year-old exhumation, DNA under fingernails — and the difference between the case the team wants and the case the evidence allows is usually the distance between Pete's report and the detectives' first read.

Character Overview

About Pete Chin

Pete Chin is the medical examiner of Will Trent, played by Kurt Yue. He first appears in Season 2 and is credited across Seasons 2, 3, and 4 — 28 episodes in all — with his largest presence in Season 4, where his findings repeatedly determine what the team's cases actually are.

His work is the evidentiary hinge of the season's biggest stories: at the burned-out scene of the Season 4 premiere he cannot make an official call on the apparent Will/Ulster murder-suicide, leaving Angie room to prove the scene was staged; his findings push the fraternity case back a year and turn an exhumation into a murder; and his autopsy of Amanda Wagner recovers the DNA under her fingernails that names her killer.
