Overview
Episode Summary
A woman is ambushed in an abandoned building. At the scene the GBI finds two male victims — one dead of the woman's desperate counterattack, one shot three times — and a purse suggesting a pregnant woman was present. The victims are Isabella Altman, 22, and Conrad, an associate youth pastor at New Beginnings Community of Faith. Councilman Victor Carrey pressures Amanda to close the case quickly and quietly because it threatens his redevelopment plans.
Pastor Reggie is exposed as Leonard Parker, wanted for a violent Philadelphia robbery 20 years earlier; his prints are on the knife, and he admits he has been protecting the missing Isabella, who is too afraid to come forward. When officers reach the safe house she is gone. The trail ends at the Carrey house: Councilman Carrey's wife Erin shoots her husband dead — he had gotten Isabella pregnant — and Will helps Isabella deliver her baby while Faith arrests Erin.
Angie, back on duty, and Ormewood work the sauna death of Ted, poisoned with buprenorphine; the trail runs through Ted's ex-business partner Wolfgang and ends with Ted's brother Denny admitting he killed him.

Will Trent Season 2 Episode 3 Recap
A woman touches up her make-up and walks into an abandoned building to meet someone; a figure behind her pulls a bag over her head. The episode then moves to Angie passing her physical test and returning to the field, with Will showing up to take care of her and Angie pushing him to talk to someone about the explosion and Cricket's death — an offer he does not get to answer before the case call comes.
At the scene, Amanda is unhappy with Faith's late arrivals all week. Inside, the body from the opening is not the woman but a man; Trent's read of the blood leads to a second male victim shot three times, and a purse whose contents indicate the woman was pregnant. Reconstruction: the woman was the target, the first man attacked her, the second victim tried to protect her and was shot — and the woman killed her attacker by plunging the building's loose door knob into his back. The pregnant woman is missing.
The victims are identified as Isabella Altman, 22, and Conrad, an associate youth pastor at New Beginnings Community of Faith; no one knows the father of Isabella's child. Councilman Victor Carrey pulls Amanda outside to press for a quick, quiet resolution — the murder threatens his redevelopment plans. Isabella worked on Carrey's campaign the previous summer; Carrey, his wife and his assistant cooperate, but the councilman looks worried.
Trent digs into Reggie and finds the pastor is not who he claims: his real name is Leonard Parker, wanted in Philadelphia for a violent robbery that left an innocent bystander dead — on the run for 20 years. Reggie's prints are on the knife found at the scene; he says Conrad carried the knife for protection, and admits he knows where Isabella is — she is terrified, and he is protecting her. She had gone to the building to meet her baby's father and doubts the police will believe her; she fears the father could get custody.
Faith convinces Reggie to give up the location, but Isabella is gone when they arrive — someone got there first. The people who knew about the safe house lead to the councilman.
At the Carrey house the officers hear gunshots. Carrey runs out asking for help and does not get far: his wife Erin shoots him in the head. Isabella is inside, in labor — Will helps her deliver the baby, moved beyond tears, while Faith deals with Erin, who confesses she lost it after her husband got Isabella pregnant and ruined her plans to make him governor.
The B-case: Angie and Ormewood, partners again, catch the death of Ted — cardiac arrest in a sauna, with a lethal level of the fast-acting pain medication buprenorphine in his system. The coroner is sure someone poisoned him at Rubi Dreams Wellness Centre. Wolfgang, Ted's ex-business partner, is questioned after a melted plastic stone is found in the sauna; he explains Ted withdrew from their sauna franchise plans because his father was dying of cancer.
The last piece takes the detectives to a hospice and to Ted's brother Denny, who admits he killed Ted — Ted refused to help when their parents got sick while wanting his share of the will. Angie reminds Ormewood she is sober when he suggests a drink, and sends him home.
Will calls someone to pick up Reggie and promises to put in a word; Reggie says he is ready to make peace with his demons and hopes the same for Will. Will tells Amanda how cathartic it felt to help deliver Isabella's baby, and the episode closes with the two of them sitting silently in his office.

Analysis
Character Development
Will Trent
Will is distracted mid-investigation by memories of Cricket, and later helps Isabella deliver her baby inside the Carrey house. Interpretation: Will lets Amanda sit next to his grief without being asked to explain it — a small change from going it alone.
Angie Polaski
Angie passes her physical test and returns to the field, telling Will she is in pain and offering to be the person he talks to about Cricket. Interpretation: Angie is managing her own recovery boundaries even while pushing her clearance past her doctor's advice.
Michael Ormewood
Ormewood works the sauna case with Angie and bristles when the coroner hands him a divorce lawyer card. Interpretation: Ormewood is treating the marriage repair like a work assignment — more effort, same avoidance of the conversation that matters.
Faith Mitchell
Amanda is unhappy with Faith's late arrivals all week, and Faith is the one who convinces Reggie to give up Isabella's location. Interpretation: Faith's interview work, not scene forensics, is what breaks the case open.

Will Trent Season 2 Episode 3 Ending Explained
Spoilers below
This section discusses the ending of "You Don't Have to Understand" in detail. Stop here if you haven't watched the episode.
The main case resolves at the Carrey house. Erin Carrey killed her husband — the councilman who got Isabella pregnant and, in Erin's telling, wrecked the gubernatorial future she had engineered for him — and she confesses on the spot. Isabella, found in labor inside the house, delivers her baby with Will's help and is finally safe; Reggie's protection of her is explained, and his own secret — he is Leonard Parker, wanted in Philadelphia for a robbery-homicide 20 years back — is headed for a surrender Will says he will support.
The sauna murder closes with the coroner's poisoning read confirmed: Ted's brother Denny admits he killed him, telling the detectives Ted refused to help when their parents got sick while expecting his share of the will. The episode's last note belongs to Will: he tells Amanda how magical and cathartic helping deliver Isabella's baby felt, and the two sit together in silence — the show's picture of Will letting someone sit next to his grief without asking him to explain it.
