Overview

Episode Summary

Will reunites with a long-lost relative and uncovers unexpected and profound similarities. Antonio Miranda, Lucy Morales' younger brother, is a professor — warm, charismatic, and dyslexic like his nephew. Over shrimp tacos (with Betty and Portia in attendance), Antonio answers Will's questions: Lucy was two years older, the coolest girl he knew; they bonded over music, and she once took him to see R.E.M. Learning of her death broke his heart and sent him to Puerto Rico; he moved back after Hurricane Maria.

Lucy came to Atlanta with a boyfriend and told Antonio she was looking for a job at Emory, where employees could take classes. Antonio later visits Will with one of Lucy's favorite records, and Will — pushed by Nico — invites him to a potluck at Ormewood's house, where he meets Amanda, Faith and Angie. Meanwhile the GBI and APD investigate a judge's murder, and Faith's connection with Luke deepens.

Will Trent Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

The GBI and APD work the murder of a judge through the hour, while the episode's emotional center is the meeting Will has been circling since James named his uncle.

Will comes face to face with Antonio Miranda — Lucy Morales' younger brother, a professor, as warm and charismatic as promised. At first they appear to have nothing in common, until it comes out that Antonio is dyslexic, just like his nephew, and the two bond over the shared learning disability. Antonio agrees to answer all of Will's questions over shrimp tacos — dogs Betty and Portia in attendance — and Will uses the meal to practice his Spanish.

What Antonio knows: Lucy was his older sister, two years older — "I worshipped her. Seriously, coolest girl I ever knew." They grew up together and bonded over music; she once took him to see R.E.M. When he found out she died, it broke his heart. He moved to Puerto Rico soon after, lived a whole life there, and came back after Hurricane Maria — "It's home," he says of the island, and offers: "We'll go." "I'd love that," Will answers.

A few days later, over coffee at Antonio's regular spot, the conversation continues: Lucy came to Atlanta with a boyfriend — "I know how that sounds, but she had dreams" — and before they lost touch she told Antonio she was looking for a job at Emory, because they would let her take classes if she worked there. The conversation is cut short when two of Antonio's friends show up, one of them openly disdainful of cops.

Antonio later visits Will at home with a mea culpa shaped like one of Lucy's favorite records: Nick Lowe's "Jesus of Cool." Will, with a push from Nico, invites Antonio to a potluck at Ormewood's house, where Antonio meets Amanda, Faith and Angie.

Will Trent Season 2 Episode 6 Ending Explained

Spoilers below

This section discusses the ending of "We Are Family" in detail. Stop here if you haven't watched the episode.

The episode resolves the meeting, not the mystery. What Will learns about his mother is texture, not answers: Lucy was two years older than the brother who worshipped her; she loved music and gave her brother R.E.M.; she came to Atlanta with a boyfriend and dreams, and was looking for a job at Emory that would let her take classes before the family lost touch. Why the surname differs from Morales — the question James's phrasing planted — remains unaddressed on-screen.

What changes is Will. He asks for the meeting, shows up, practices his Spanish, accepts the offered trip to Puerto Rico in principle, and — with Nico's push — brings his uncle into the family circle at Ormewood's potluck, where Antonio meets Amanda, Faith and Angie. The judge's murder investigation advances the procedural spine, and Faith's connection with Luke deepens, but the hour closes on Will's family tree gaining a living branch.
