Overview
Episode Summary
Elizabeth and Nathan finally get their date night, and it goes wrong in the best way. She has left two train tickets on his desk and surprises him with the new Buster Keaton film at The Palace in Union City. Outside the theatre Toddy Davis — the coin dealer Nathan met undercover as “Danny DeMarco” — recognises him, mentions he has just come back from the Netherlands with a haul of collectibles, and then Toddy's wife Trudy insists that “Danny” and his wife “Diane” join their party. The two of them are in the car before they can refuse.
At the party the operation gets harder rather than easier. Nathan fills Elizabeth in on Toddy and the case, the two of them keep contradicting each other about how they met, and when Toddy and Trudy ask for their song they name “You Made Me Love You” and end up performing it on stage. The payoff comes late in the night: Toddy shows Nathan a 24-carat pocket watch with the same double-headed eagle medallion as the gold coin, says he bought it from a rancher in one of the valleys past Benson Hills who died last year, and offers to sell him some.
The Hope Valley threads move in parallel. Rosemary is mounting her own production of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” which Lee took her to see; she auditions the town, cannot find an Algernon, and casts Bill after Elizabeth whispers a suggestion and Bill demonstrates a British accent he once used undercover. Ava knows the script, helps run lines when Rosemary is distracted, and is given props for the rehearsal only — a limit that Episode 8 removes. Allie and Oliver take their map to Bill, who sends them to the Governor's office, then to Lucas, who keeps the map.
Edie Martell's thread turns. She encourages Lucas to draft the map as a formal proposal, then leaves before dinner. Later that night she comes to his office with a deck of cards, loses at gin, and asks him to drop the proposal — saying it would save a lot of people a lot of trouble, including him. When he asks where it is coming from she cites attorney-client privilege. In the episode's quietest beat, Rosemary admits to Lee that she feels threatened by Ava, and he tells her there is no one like her.

When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 7 Recap
Elizabeth writes in her journal about the sense of possibility in the autumn air. Allie and Oliver follow the map in the woods together. At the mercantile Rosemary opens a package of play scripts with Minnie: Lee took her to a performance of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and it has inspired her to put on her own show, which she says she will direct, produce and star in. Elizabeth has written a guide for her new curriculum with Fiona's encouragement, and Fiona wants to send it to publishers and other educators.
Elizabeth tells Fiona that everything with her and Nathan feels new and exciting and that they are enjoying every moment, and she kisses him outside.
At the saloon Ava sings “Ain't We Got Fun” as she delivers drinks to customers' tables. Lee and Hickam review the numbers and say that Ava's tab is too expensive to support, and they wonder whether her parents really are supposed to arrive soon as she claims. Lee shows Rosemary the printed audition notices for the play, and Mike says he was thinking about auditioning and relays that Ava was interested as well. Ava tries to approach Rosemary, but Rosemary hurries out of the door to distribute flyers. Elizabeth enters and asks Lee whether he got “them,” and Lee hands her a small brown envelope.
Nathan comes to Elizabeth's with two surprise train tickets to Union City that she left on his desk, and she tells him to trust her. He tickles the plan out of her: they are going to the new Buster Keaton movie at The Palace that day, and she has arranged childcare and a taxi. Nathan kisses her and leaves to get ready.
At the mercantile Ned studies the script for the audition, and Fiona tells someone on the other line of the phone that she will consult with Mr. Weaver and get back to them. Elizabeth arrives with copies of her curriculum ready to mail out, and Fiona mentions that sometimes you should query a publisher first before mailing the entire manuscript, but that it is good to be bold. Elizabeth leaves to work more on the curriculum before mailing it.
Hickam auditions theatrically for Rosemary and Elizabeth at the schoolhouse, and after he stutters Rosemary ushers him off the stage. Rosemary tells Elizabeth that she cannot find the right actor for Algernon, and Mike takes the stage to try again. Rosemary promises Hickam that he was great and wonders to Elizabeth who in this town is “swashbuckling” and “bold” enough for the Algernon character. Elizabeth whispers something in her ear, and the two of them leave to find out whether “he” will do.
Allie and Oliver review their map together at Bill's office, and Bill encourages them to take their findings right to the Governor, so they leave to do so. Nathan comes in and Bill tells him that per a report from Inspector McGill, two double-headed eagle coins like the one they have have shown up in Amsterdam. Rosemary enters and overhears, and notes that it still does not address where the Garrison gang hid the rest of the gold; she suggests getting the public involved with a Valley-wide treasure hunt, but Bill and Nathan think it is too much publicity.
Rosemary then asks Bill about a British accent he once took on undercover, he shows it off, and she declares that he will be her Algernon — which he reluctantly agrees to. Joseph and Henry work on props and sets for the play together at the schoolhouse, and Joseph tells Henry that Minnie and the choir are always looking for good soloists. He sings as they work.
Edwin lets Allie and Oliver into Lucas's office to speak with him about the cattle crossing, and they present their maps suggesting that the cattle take a different route to a larger body of water to save the stream from contamination. Lucas tells them that they make a great team and asks to keep the map. Nathan and Elizabeth enjoy their night at the movie in Union City and share a dance while Nathan sings outside the theatre.
Toddy Davis notices Nathan and calls him “Danny,” mentions that he has just got back from the Netherlands with quite the haul of collectibles, and Toddy's wife Trudy joins them and encourages Toddy to invite “Danny” and “Diane” up to their party. The two of them try to turn the invitation down but are corralled into the car and into the party.
Rosemary gets distracted with Ned by the props amidst rehearsals, so Ava chimes in to help Bill, Lee and Mike run lines. Ava tells Rosemary that she knows the script from a production in the past and wants to be involved, and Rosemary tells her she can be in charge of props, but for the rehearsal only.
Nathan and Elizabeth change into party clothes at Toddy and Trudy's and join the party, and Nathan brings Elizabeth up to speed on the Toddy case and on his identity. Trudy gets Elizabeth to dance and Nathan and Toddy join in, and when Trudy asks Elizabeth how she met Nathan, Elizabeth deflects and asks how Trudy and Toddy met.
Lucas enters the café and approaches Edie with the map Allie and Oliver made; Edie encourages him to take the next steps to draft it as a proposal, but when Lucas asks for her help with the legal language she says she is late for a meeting and leaves before they can have dinner together.
Back at the party Elizabeth and Nathan struggle to get their story straight about their relationship. They tell Toddy and Trudy that their song is “You Made Me Love You,” so Trudy tells them to sing it on stage for the party, and they do, and the crowd applauds. Edie comes to Lucas's office later that night as he drafts the land proposal, presents a deck of cards and asks whether he wants to play a game with her.
Lee and Rosemary discuss the play as they do the dishes at their house. Rosemary tells him there are more roles to fill, and Lee wonders why she does not cast Ava, who seems to know the material so well. Rosemary says that Ava is so dramatic and takes up all the oxygen in the room, and then tells him that she feels a little threatened by her. Lee tells Rosemary that she is brilliant and that there is no one like her, and she thanks him for always standing by her. They tell one another that they love one another and share a kiss.
At the saloon Lucas beats Edie at gin and tells her that she has a tell — fiddling with her ring finger — and says he believes she did not come just to play cards. She asks him to drop the land proposal, because it would save a lot of people a lot of trouble, including him. Lucas asks where this is coming from, and Edie says it is a matter of attorney-client privilege. She says they can still be friends playing cards, and they continue playing.
Back at the party Toddy tells Nathan that he might have something for the eccentric and wealthy “client” Nathan describes to him, and shows him a 24-carat pocket watch with the same double-headed eagle medallion design as the gold coin. Toddy says he got it from a rancher in one of the valleys past Benson Hills, that the rancher had got his hands on a case of them, and that he died last year. Toddy tells Nathan he could sell him a few, and Nathan says he will talk to his “guy.”
Rosemary looks at old articles about her acting in “Miss Innocence” and tries on old prop gloves, and when Lee asks for her help she puts the gloves down and joins him. Mei joins Fiona at the salon as she waits for a call from Mr. Weaver about whether he has accepted the offer on the salon, and asks whether Fiona is ready to let go of the place; Fiona says she is not, and that she still does not know what to say to the marriage proposal. Fiona tells Mei she never dreamt of her wedding or the perfect life, and Mei tells her that she has a spark and should follow it.
The phone rings and Mr. Weaver tells Fiona that he is accepting the offer on the salon. Mei tells her that as one adventure ends another begins, and hangs a “SOLD” sign on the door.
Elizabeth tells Rosemary about their night and their performance as Danny and Diane DeMarco. Rosemary wonders whether Elizabeth finds it odd that this heiress from Baltimore, Ava Riella, is running around town like a one-woman Vaudeville act, and Elizabeth reminds her that she did something a bit similar when she first arrived in town. Elizabeth tells Rosemary that she finally did send her curriculum in the mail — “leap and the net will appear.” Rosemary says she will offer Ava a role in her play too, and the two of them cheers their tea cups to “more adventure.”

Analysis
Character Development
Nathan Grant
Nathan's date with Elizabeth becomes an unplanned undercover operation; he holds the “Danny” identity through the party and works Toddy into showing him the watch.
Confirmed in the episode: Nathan brings Elizabeth the train tickets she left on his desk, tells Elizabeth about the Toddy case and his identity at the party, and tells Toddy he will talk to his “guy” about buying some of the watches.
Interpretation: The episode is the season's clearest demonstration that his undercover identity has become a liability as well as an asset — he cannot have a private evening, and he and Elizabeth keep contradicting each other about their own relationship in front of strangers. The watch is the first physical link the investigation has produced.
Elizabeth Thornton
Elizabeth arranges the date, is drawn into the operation as “Diane,” performs on stage, and finally mails her curriculum.
Confirmed in the episode: Elizabeth arranges childcare and a taxi for the Union City trip, deflects Trudy's question about how she met Nathan, and tells Rosemary that she finally sent her curriculum in the mail.
Interpretation: She is a competent improvisor under pressure and the episode shows her enjoying it, which is a register the season has not given her before. The curriculum going into the mail is the episode's other decision, and it is the one with consequences — Episode 8 is the Department of Education's response to it.
Rosemary Coulter
Rosemary mounts her own production of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” casts Bill as Algernon, and admits to Lee that Ava makes her feel threatened.
Confirmed in the episode: Rosemary says she will direct, produce and star in her own show, declares that Bill will be her Algernon, and tells Lee that she feels a little threatened by Ava.
Interpretation: The episode names the Ava tension out loud rather than playing it as comedy, and it is Lee who gets her to say it. Her decision to give Ava props “for the rehearsal only” is the last line she holds in the season before she gives it up in Episode 8.
Ava Riella
Ava waits tables and sings at the saloon, knows the play script, runs lines with the cast and is given props for the rehearsal only.
Confirmed in the episode: Ava sings “Ain't We Got Fun” as she delivers drinks to customers' tables, tells Rosemary that she knows the script from a production in the past, and is told she can be in charge of props for the rehearsal only.
Interpretation: The episode establishes that she is genuinely more capable than the town has credited, and that Rosemary is the only person who has noticed. Her competence is what makes her a threat to Rosemary rather than a joke, and Episode 8 pays that off by giving her Gwendolen.
Edie Martell
Edie pushes Lucas to draft the map as a proposal, then asks him to drop it and refuses to explain why.
Confirmed in the episode: Edie encourages Lucas to take the next steps to draft the map as a proposal, asks Lucas to drop the land proposal, and tells him it is a matter of attorney-client privilege when he asks where it is coming from.
Interpretation: The episode reverses her position inside a single night, and the reason is deliberately withheld — the reveal that McGinty holds the ranchers' loans is held back to Episode 8. Her card games with Lucas are the season's clearest signal that the reversal is not personal.
Lucas Bouchard
Lucas keeps Allie and Oliver's map, drafts the land proposal, beats Edie at gin and asks her where her objection comes from.
Confirmed in the episode: Lucas asks Allie and Oliver to keep the map, drafts the land proposal at his office, and asks Edie where her request is coming from.
Interpretation: He does the work the students handed him rather than shelving it, which is what separates him from the Governor's office in this thread. His refusal to let the cards drop — he keeps playing after she asks him to drop the proposal — is the episode's statement about him.
Fiona Miller
Fiona takes the offer on the salon and admits she still does not know what to say to the marriage proposal.
Confirmed in the episode: Fiona tells Elizabeth that it is sometimes better to query a publisher before mailing a whole manuscript, tells Mei that she is not ready to let go of the salon, and tells Mei that she still does not know what to say to the marriage proposal.
Interpretation: The sale closes in this episode and she is shown to be ambivalent about it, which is the set-up for Episode 8's decision. Her advice to Elizabeth about querying a publisher first is the same instinct she cannot apply to her own life.

When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 7 Ending Explained
Spoilers below
This section discusses the ending of "Dance the Night Away" in detail. Stop here if you haven't watched the episode.
The episode ends on three unresolved notes rather than one. In Union City, Toddy Davis shows Nathan a 24-carat pocket watch with the same double-headed eagle medallion as the gold coin and says he bought it from a rancher in a valley past Benson Hills who died last year, and that he could sell Nathan a few. Nathan says he will talk to his “guy.” The episode does not name the rancher — that identification is left to Episode 8 — and it does not establish that the watch came from the train robbery.
In Hope Valley, Edie Martell comes to Lucas's office at night, loses at gin, and asks him to drop the land proposal because it would save a lot of people a lot of trouble, including him. Lucas asks where it is coming from and Edie answers only that it is a matter of attorney-client privilege. Her reason is not given in this episode; the episode also does not show Lucas agreeing to drop the proposal or refusing to, so the proposal's status is left open.
The third note is the quietest. Rosemary admits to Lee that she feels threatened by Ava, and then tells Elizabeth that she will offer Ava a role in the play too. The episode does not resolve what role that is, and it leaves Ava's competence — and the question of why she knows the script so well — unexplained. Ava's tab at the saloon is also left where it was: Lee and Hickam state that it is too expensive to support and that they doubt her parents are coming, and nothing in the episode changes that. Fiona's salon sale closes, and she has still not said no to the marriage proposal.

Who is “Diane” in When Calls the Heart Season 12?
Elizabeth's undercover name. When Toddy and Trudy assume Nathan's “Danny DeMarco” is married, Elizabeth poses as his wife Diane. She uses the same persona in Episode 8 when Nathan tells her to channel Diane instead of Mrs. Thornton.

Why does Edie ask Lucas to drop the land proposal in Season 12?
The episode does not say. Edie asks Lucas to drop it because it would save a lot of people a lot of trouble, including him, and when he asks where it is coming from she says only that it is a matter of attorney-client privilege. The reason is revealed in Episode 8.
What does Toddy show Nathan in When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 7?

Does Fiona sell the salon in When Calls the Heart Season 12?
Yes. Mr. Weaver calls her at the salon to accept the offer, and Mei hangs a “SOLD” sign on the door. Fiona tells Mei she is not ready to let go of the place and that she still does not know what to say to the marriage proposal.
