Henry Gowen

Henry Gowen runs the coal company the town is built on, and for most of the series he is the man Hope Valley has learned not to trust. He is portrayed by Martin Cummins and is a supporting figure whose arc in later seasons turns toward something closer to redemption.

At the start he holds every lever: Coal Valley is a company town, he wields the power, and he is asked to settle questions as small as who owns a plank pulled out of the mine. The widows arrive at his office in miners' gear and he agrees to let Abigail open her café on terms that are plainly his own, splitting the profits fifty-fifty and leaving the repairs to her. He is less than thrilled when a mining investigation opens, and his interest in where the widows' claim goes is never neutral.

What changes him is slow. He loses the company, works as a laborer at Lee's mill, eventually becomes mayor, and ends the series doing something he would never have done at the start: he goes on the radio at Elizabeth's prompting and publicly appeals to his son Christopher to come home, admitting his own failures in the process. Joseph Canfield is the one he turns to for counsel, and Christopher is the person every version of him is trying to reach.

Henry Gowen is Hope Valley's long-running antagonist turned redeemed patriarch - the man the town learned to distrust and who ends the series as the one asked to speak publicly about forgiveness.

His early seasons establish the fall. By Season 5 he is labouring at Lee Coulter's mill while Sheriff Bill Avery keeps a close eye on him, and Season 10 names the destination outright: Henry finally finds redemption.

Season 11 shows what that looks like in practice. Lucas Bouchard turns down his help and then takes it; Henry hesitates over his own methods, telling Joseph that the person he becomes when doing business is not good, and then uses exactly those methods to break the Benson Hills deadlock - accepting every demand and proposing that the two towns merge.

Season 13 hands him the one problem he cannot solve cleanly: evidence that points at his own son. He asks Joseph for advice about a loved one who did something horrible, travels to Union City to tell Christopher not to trade his humanity for a paycheck, and leaves the decision with him rather than turning him in. When Christopher is run off the road and then flees, Henry goes on the radio at Elizabeth's prompting and appeals to him publicly, admitting his own failures.

Henry's arc runs through three relationships. His son Christopher is the thread that tests him - the crime he will not report, and the return he begs for over the radio. Joseph Canfield is the friend he goes to when he cannot answer a moral question himself, first to say that the man he becomes in business is not good and later to ask what to do about a loved one who did something horrible. Elizabeth is the neighbour who hands him the microphone when he needs to appeal to Christopher. The show's quietest key to him is Jack Thornton: Henry tells LJ that Jack's invitation to his bachelor lunch helped encourage him to become a better person, which is the series explaining its own redemption story in a single line.
