Florence Blakeley

Florence Blakeley is one of Hope Valley's most vivid supporting presences: a widow with firm opinions, a soft center and a talent for saying exactly what the whole town is thinking. Working at the mercantile, she special-orders what Hope Valley cannot get elsewhere and turns every counter conversation into a small institution of her own. Her days are woven into the town's communal life: she joins the swap meet organized to cut waste, helps plan Rosemary's surprise baby shower, hangs the welcome banner for Governor Balfour's visit alongside Ned, brings Elizabeth's wedding dress out of hiding before the ball, and volunteers her shifts at the daycare centre set up for Faith Carter's young ward Lily. Wherever the town gathers - choir practice, festivals, weddings, radio hours - Florence is there, usually standing beside her fellow widow Molly Sullivan, the two of them functioning as Hope Valley's watching chorus: judging everything, missing nothing, and caring fiercely about the outcome. Her second-chance romance and marriage to merchant Ned Yost give the later seasons one of their warmest running stories, and she meets its small tests the way she meets everything else - loudly, loyally, and with an opinion nobody asked for and everybody expects.

Florence Blakeley is Hope Valley's iron-willed romantic: a widow of firm opinions and a soft center, who mourns loudly, loves wholeheartedly and disapproves - loudly - of whatever scandal the town is currently whispering about.

Her second chance at love arrives with merchant Ned Yost, and their courtship and marriage give the series one of its sweetest arguments for beginning again at any age. Season 13 puts the marriage to a small test: Florence falls out with Ned when he throws out the box of keepsakes she kept of their relationship, and he wins her back by writing down all his favourite memories of her, including the moment he knew he was in love.

Between the two of them the mercantile keeps running, and Florence's days there are the spine of her later seasons. She special-orders what the town cannot get, collects what its children need, volunteers at the daycare centre built for Faith Carter's ward Lily, and turns up for every choir rehearsal, festival, radio hour and quilting bee Hope Valley stages - usually with an opinion nobody asked for and everybody expects.
