We Were Liars Season 1 Episode 4: The Fourth of You Lie

Episode 4 opens on the Fourth of July in the present timeline, with the Sinclairs preparing to celebrate as they always do. Cadence tells Gat she has been thinking about last year's Fourth of July and how Johnny reacted when his tennis teammates arrived at their party, giving the same frightening look he gave when Blake Beaumont appeared at Tipper's funeral. Gat says he is trying to protect her, but she does not want to hear it, especially given how absent he was when she needed him most.

Cadence sneaks into Johnny's room, works out his passcode and finds old cryptic texts between him and his tennis teammate Jackson. The messages suggest Jackson held an incriminating video of Johnny and that Blake Beaumont hacked Jackson's phone, transferred the video, and texted Johnny demanding payment or he would release it. Cadence tries to watch the video but cannot without wifi.

The episode flashes back to the Fourth of July in 2016, when the family was trying to lift spirits after Tipper's death. Knowing how much Harris loved Tipper's pies, Penny, Carrie and Bess each try to bake the perfect one; the Liars prepare their own party elsewhere on the island; and Ed tells Johnny he plans to propose to Carrie that night, which delights him. In the kitchen Carrie mentions running into Gat's girlfriend Raquel, and Gat immediately looks to Cadence; she plays it off and tells him to invite her, then resolves to flirt with other guests to distract herself.

Penny's pie emerges perfect while Carrie's and Bess's burn; Penny and Bess fall into a shouting match that ends with Penny having a panic attack and her pie ruined. At the party Johnny notices his tennis teammates, and when Mirren says she probably invited them he storms off, throwing his beer bottle to the ground. Cadence drinks heavily and dances with Jackson, who tells her to pass on that he is looking for Johnny, while Gat watches from a distance.

At the grown-ups' gathering Harris grumbles that no pies reached the dessert table; Carrie sits him down and explains her financial struggles, revealing that Johnny's trouble at school drained their savings, that Ed does not know how bad it is, and that Bess has depleted her trust fund. Harris agrees to help her.
