We Were Liars Season 1 Episode 6: When Lies Gives You Lemons

Episode 6 centres on the Sinclair family's annual Lemon Hunt, in which lemons and a single lime are hidden around Beechwood Island. As usual, whoever finds the most lemons wins a prize and whoever finds the lime gets something bigger; this year Harris changes the stakes so that the most lemons wins his Boston property and the lime wins the entire island after his death, making the competition desperate for Penny, Carrie and Bess.

Before the hunt, Harris pulls Gat into his office to ask about his intentions in life, and Gat says he wants to be a foreign correspondent; the conversation is cut short when Carrie arrives with Gat's mother, Maya, who hugs Cadence and pulls her aside for a chat. The hunt begins, with Penny, Bess, Carrie, Johnny, Cadence and the littles searching while Evan persuades Mirren to take part, remarking that he would hurt anyone who made her feel bad.

Gat and Maya walk the island together, and she tells him he has changed a great deal, not for the good; he acknowledges it but says he only wants to be with Cadence. Meanwhile Penny, Carrie and Bess each find a lemon but fall to arguing; Penny trips into the water, Bess steals her lemons, and Carrie breaks down over no longer being with Ed.

Wandering alone, Gat comes across Harris's office and sees him hiding the lime — proof that Harris never intended to give up Beechwood. Gat steals the lime and shows it to the other Liars, explaining that the game was a power trip to keep them all under Harris's control. The four Liars apologise to one another and together devise a plan, while Carrie and Maya share a heart-to-heart in the kitchen about motherhood.

When the hunt ends, Cadence, Johnny and Mirren claim they found nothing, and then Gat arrives with a basket full of lemons and the lime; outsmarted, Harris voids the prizes for broken rules. He instead offers Gat the chance to apply for Tipper's scholarship programme — a recommendation and an interview in New York — and everyone looks shocked as Gat checks Cadence's reaction.

Later, in her room, Cadence, though hurt by the thought of being apart, encourages Gat to take the interview; he makes clear that accepting it would mean not returning to Beechwood next summer, and gives her an early birthday present to open on the day.

As of S1E6, Gat is offered the chance to apply and Cadence encourages him, but he has not decided.
