We Were Liars Season 1 Episode 3 Recap

Episode 3 opens with Cadence meeting Harris in his office and pressing him for details about Tipper's funeral; he refuses to discuss it. Later, in Tipper's garden, Cadence hallucinates seeing her grandmother, collapses under the weight of the moment, and just before losing consciousness begins to recover fragments of her lost memory.

Waking up, Cadence tells Johnny, Mirren and Gat that she now remembers everything up to Tipper's funeral but nothing afterwards. Gat panics, knowing the two of them were on bad terms then because he lied about having a girlfriend, but Cadence reassures him it is in the past. She asks the Liars what they remember from the funeral; they claim to remember little, and Johnny later tells her a version of events that she knows is false.

Alone with Gat, Cadence reveals she has regained more memories and that Johnny lied. Gat is hurt that she hid her returning memory from him; she admits she only pretended to be in the dark so she could work out who was lying about last summer. Johnny had told her she saw him and his tennis rival kissing, but she actually had to separate them from a fight, in which the rival said Johnny had almost killed a kid and that video footage existed. Concluding Johnny lied and Mirren covered for him, she asks Gat for help, but he walks away.

Penny is handling Tipper's funeral arrangements and now holds her mother's black pearl necklace; Harris wants it buried with Tipper, but Penny is unwilling to part with it. At the funeral Cadence remains distant even from her father, and a tennis player from an opposing team pats Johnny's shoulder, clearly the rival with history. Afterwards Gat tries to talk to Cadence and she ices him out, while Johnny learns his rival is Blake Beaumont, the same person Mirren has been texting.

At the Clairmont, Carrie notices Penny wearing their mother's black pearl necklace and the three sisters argue over who Tipper meant to have it, taking the argument outside. Harris meanwhile learns from a seller that Tipper had been trying to sell her father's old painting — the same painting she meant to sell to help Penny financially.
