Episode 5 is largely set in Summer 16, as a storm bears down on Beechwood. Cadence and Gat share an intimate moment on the beach before Bess interrupts; Gat is in a bad place because his uncle Ed left the island for a hotel after Carrie rejected his proposal. Meanwhile Mirren struggles to lock the lighthouse door, and Evan appears to help; with the storm coming they decide to shelter together inside. At Carrie's house, Carrie tells Johnny that Harris has been supporting them financially and suggests the best way to help is to get on Harris's good side…

Episode Summary

We Were Liars episode 5 is set largely in Summer 16 as a storm approaches Beechwood. Cadence and Gat's beach moment is interrupted by Bess, and Gat is struggling after his uncle Ed left the island when Carrie rejected his proposal. Mirren is helped at the lighthouse by Evan and they shelter there together. Carrie tells Johnny that Harris has been supporting them financially and advises him to get on Harris's good side; at lunch Harris makes a racist remark, Cadence calls him out, and Johnny pretends to agree with Harris to stay in his favour.

Bess learns Harris has noticed Cadence's disrespect and betrays Cadence by telling Penny she and Gat have grown closer. At the boathouse Johnny realises his younger brother Will has taken a boat into the storm; he and Gat rush out, and Johnny rescues Will but goes under without a lifejacket until Gat pulls him up. Mirren and Cadence fall out over Cadence telling Penny about Bess's affair, and Johnny comes clean to Gat about the bad deed from the video.

Episode 5 is largely set in Summer 16, as a storm bears down on Beechwood. Cadence and Gat share an intimate moment on the beach before Bess interrupts; Gat is in a bad place because his uncle Ed left the island for a hotel after Carrie rejected his proposal. Meanwhile Mirren struggles to lock the lighthouse door, and Evan appears to help; with the storm coming they decide to shelter together inside.

At Carrie's house, Carrie tells Johnny that Harris has been supporting them financially and suggests the best way to help is to get on Harris's good side, advice Johnny takes. At lunch Harris says something racist; Cadence calls him out, which angers Penny, who is trying to win Harris's favour, while Johnny pretends to share Harris's view to stay in his good graces. Afterwards Cadence, Gat and Johnny argue in the hallway until Harris orders Gat and Johnny to secure the boats.

Bess privately tells Harris she had no idea her husband was stealing money from her. When Penny passes, Harris pointedly notes that Cadence was disrespectful at lunch, and Bess takes the moment to betray Cadence, revealing that she and Gat have been growing closer under Penny's nose. In the lighthouse Mirren and Evan grow closer and hook up again.

At the boathouse, Johnny asks Gat about a missing boat and realises his younger brother Will has taken it into the storm; the two rush off to find him. The family learns from the littles that Will is missing and that Gat and Johnny have gone after him. Johnny reaches Will but, without a lifejacket, begins to struggle and goes under; Gat appears and pulls him back up, and the three hold on to a buoy to reach the boat.

Back on land, Mirren argues with Cadence, furious that she told Penny about Bess's affair, which set off the lighthouse row; the cousins are now on bad terms. Gat, Johnny and Will return to the Clairmont to hugs, and afterwards Johnny makes up with Gat and confesses the bad deed he did to another student — the same act from the video Cadence found.
