We Were Liars Season 1 Episode 7: Everybody Knows That the Captain Lied

Episode 7 is set at the close of Summer 16, as the staff at the Clairmont prepare for the end-of-season dinner. Penny, Carrie and Bess are all eager to stay in Harris's good graces and secure a place in his will, and each instructs their children to behave; Gat is not at the dinner because he is believed to be on his way to New York for his interview.

At the table Bess turns on her sisters, revealing that she knows about the video of Johnny beating another student and that Penny has hired a lawyer to conceal secrets in her divorce. Carrie retaliates by telling Bess to cover the scratch marks on her back from salty Dan, whom Bess had hooked up with again earlier in the episode. Cadence, Johnny and Mirren look on in shock.

The Liars then turn on their parents in front of Harris. Cadence keeps raising Gat, and when Harris becomes enraged she questions why he never actually calls Gat or Ed by their names. Johnny joins in and Carrie tries to quiet him, but he is furious, having just learned at the table that she only broke up with Ed because Harris gave her an ultimatum. Harris stands and announces that his lawyer will file his will in the morning and that inheritance will no longer decide who gets what — it will be based on what he thinks his daughters have earned — then leaves the table.

Cadence follows him outside and confronts him about his disdain for Ed and Gat, accusing him of racism and of only pretending to accept them to protect his reputation. She says his real feelings surfaced when Carrie and Ed discussed having children: he did not want mixed-race grandchildren and seized Carrie's request for help as the chance to drive Ed away for good. As Harris sets down his glass and turns, he trips on the patio steps and strikes his head on hard rock, blood pooling as Cadence shouts for help.

A helicopter airlifts Harris to hospital, revealing that the closing scene of episode 6 was about his emergency rather than Cadence's accident. Before leaving, Penny tells Cadence to find his will and burn it if it does not favour them. Bess breaks down while packing Harris's things, and Johnny confronts Carrie with a bottle of pills, telling her he knows she is slipping back into old habits. With the parents gone, the Liars sit outside; Gat suddenly arrives, having found a way onto the island.

Cadence kisses him and they begin cleaning the Clairmont, and Gat tells her he came back because of her.
