We Were Liars Season 1 Episode 2 Recap
Episode 2 opens on the day Cadence finally regains consciousness in hospital after the accident at Beechwood, which left her with a traumatic brain injury and fragmented memory. She remembers only the night she and Gat first kissed in June and waking up in August; her family refuses to tell her what happened, none of the Liars has reached out, and she cuts and dyes her hair black and is prescribed painkillers for intense migraines.
Determined to find out the truth, Cadence returns to Beechwood with her mother during the summer of 2017. She finds the Clairmont house renovated and, standing by the water, gets fragmentary flashes of Summer 16 she cannot make sense of. The next morning Johnny, Mirren and Gat remain secretive, insisting they do not know why she was alone the night of the accident. Gat later explains that Penny told the Liars not to tell Cadence anything from Summer 16 because it could trigger her migraines; she walks away, and her mother gives no real answers either.
A new letter from Gat arrives with a candy instead of the beach flower Cadence saw him envelope, leaving her confused; she tells Mirren about the beach kiss, and Mirren approves. Bess's husband Brody arrives at the Clairmont house, and Bess is uneasy because she cheated on him with salty Dan the night before. Mirren tells the Liars about her mother's infidelity, to their disgust, while Gat looks nervous. Elsewhere Penny, Bess and Carrie discuss Father's Day gifts, and Tipper announces that whoever gives Harris the best gift will wear her black pearl necklace to the end-of-summer gala.
Gat argues with the others about who the island belonged to before Harris acquired it, is hushed, and leaves feeling unheard. Tipper meets a seller to sell an expensive painting to help Penny financially, telling her Harris does not know and should not. Ed asks Harris for permission to marry Carrie, which he reluctantly grants, and Tipper offers Ed her mother's wedding ring. Cadence apologises to Gat for ignoring him, and they almost hook up before Harris walks in and interrupts.
