Overview
Episode Summary
“What Goes Around” is the episode where the mystery of Lucas's shooting finally closes and the cost of closing it lands on everyone else. Lucas has been chasing a memory he could not hold; when it comes back, it comes back with Jeanette standing in the rain in it, and with a second man Lucas had never placed — Mr. Shaw. The episode's turn is that the danger was never a stranger: Casimir Shaw used Jeanette to get to Lucas, and when the shooting went wrong he simply changed tactics and used the resort instead.
Lucas's answer is to cancel the bid and refuse to name Jeanette, which is the first thing he does all season that is not a calculation. Around him the town is doing its own arithmetic. Lee tells him to his face that he and Maisie are withdrawing their support. Allie's story runs the same shape from the other direction: she goes to Granville certain that being Dylan Parks's daughter will be enough to get her in the door, and it is not. She comes home to a father who tells her “forever,” and the episode lets that be the answer to a question she never got to ask.

When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 10 Recap
Elizabeth journals on her doorstep about Little Jack growing up. Nathan is in the yard guiding Jack on the pony that Bill got for him, and Jack rides with more confidence than Elizabeth is ready for. Elizabeth writes that she misses Jack's baby years, but that she feels excited, because every day he takes a step towards being who he is meant to be. Allie walks past and Jack calls out for her to watch him ride; she tells him perhaps later and gives Nathan a look that says she is still not ready to talk.
Elizabeth watches the two of them and reflects on how hard Nathan has been struggling to tell Allie the truth about her father, and on how painful it is that sometimes parents have to let their children hurt in order to grow. She knows that Allie needs Nathan right now, and that all she can do is be there for the both of them.
At the Coulters', Rosemary sits with Goldie and tells Lee that she just wants to stay home. Lee wonders whether it has anything to do with Montague, and Rosemary admits she feels responsible for the man being beaten, because it was her article that put his name in front of the whole town. Lee reminds her that the people of Hope Valley deserve to know the truth, and that if anyone is to blame for Montague being here at all, it is Lucas for inviting him to bid on the resort. Rosemary knows that printing the article was the right thing to do. It does not ease her guilt.
Outside the saloon, Lucas tells Henry that he has been thinking about New Orleans, and about the first time he met Jeanette. She existed on a plane above everyone else, and he wanted that for himself too. Henry reminds him that everything comes at a price, and Lucas says that he understood that, and that it was why he got out — or so he thought. Now Jeanette is back in his life and on her way to Hope Valley as the only bidder on the resort. Lucas asks Henry again whether she and her investors are on the level. Henry confirms that, based on everything he has been able to find, they are.
Rosemary goes to Bill and tells him that they could not have been more wrong about Montague being involved in Lucas's shooting. Bill agrees: someone paid Pike to take the fall, and he tells Rosemary he hopes she is not giving up, because he needs her brainpower to work this out. Rosemary reasons that whoever did it wanted them to think it was Montague, because Montague had a clear motive. Bill wonders who else would have a motive.
In town, Allie walks with Angela and tells her that she is taking the train that afternoon to see her biological father, Dylan Parks, at the prison. She admits that the prison did not exactly say yes, but she is certain they will when she is standing there, because she is his daughter. Angela encourages her to tell Nathan first, and offers her some money in case she needs it.
Nathan comes to the schoolhouse with a delivery of books for Elizabeth. She tells him that volunteers are coming soon to help with the book inventory, and that Allie offered to help. Nathan says that Allie is barely speaking to him and that he does not know whether he did the right thing. Elizabeth tells him that it is hard to know the exact amount of protective to be. She struggles with a window that will not open, and Nathan reaches past her to help; for a moment they are standing very close together, and then the student volunteers come in and the window slams shut.
At the café, Lily asks Minnie and Joseph when her grandma is coming. They tell her tomorrow. Faith arrives with Lily's stuffed animal so that Lily can take it to daycare, but Lily asks instead to spend the day at the infirmary with Faith. Joseph tells Faith to cherish today, because it is God's gift. Faith says yes, and Lily goes with her.
At the Mountie office, Nathan takes a call from Florence, who patches through the Granville Prison. Nathan says he was not aware of a request to see a prisoner, and tells them that Allie is his adopted daughter. He listens, then says that he understands and will look after it.
Jeanette comes to Lucas's office and takes a seat. Lucas tells her that they have been reconsidering her bid. She says she heard about the attack on Montague, and that she should advise her investors to pull out if people are being beaten over his resort. Lucas asks her not to be so hasty. She tells him that she knows she is all he has left.
At the saloon bar, Mike and Mei share coffee as Maisie walks in. She is early for a meeting with Mayor Coulter about the alleged surge in crime in town. Mike tells her there has not been any connection between the attack on Montague and the resort, but Maisie says she read the newspaper report and knows that Montague was in town on resort business. Maisie tells Mei that she has been telling their mother all about her, and Mike mentions that Mei is a great cook. Maisie asks Mei to cook dinner for them tomorrow night, because she promised their mother she would bring her to meet Mei.
Back at the schoolhouse, Elizabeth and the volunteers are working when Nathan comes in asking where Allie is. Everyone thought she had left to get their sandwiches for lunch. Elizabeth and Nathan ask Angela, who stammers; Nathan tells her it is important, because he needs to speak to Allie. Angela says she promised Allie she would not tell, and then tells them that Allie plans to take the train to Granville Prison. Elizabeth leaves with Nathan, and on the way he fills her in on what he has been holding back — and on the fact that the prison has told him Dylan is refusing to see Allie.
At the train station, Nathan and Elizabeth arrive to find that the train to Granville has just left, and the next one is not for another two hours. They sit on a bench, and Nathan says he should have told Allie the full truth: that Dylan was in Hope Valley a few years ago and did not care to see her. He says there is nothing redeemable about Dylan. Elizabeth wonders whether there is at least something, since the man had a daughter like Allie. Nathan says he hopes she is right. Elizabeth takes his hand and tells him not to worry: Allie is smart and resourceful, and she is going to be okay.
At the saloon, Jeanette asks Lucas when he intends to announce that they won the bid. He tells her all in due course. Lee introduces himself to Jeanette, and Bill asks her why she is in town; Jeanette says she hopes the governor will be making an announcement soon. Lee asks Lucas whether Jeanette is bidding on the resort, and Lucas confirms that she is. Lucas sits down at his desk and has another flashback to the night of his shooting — an umbrella, and more tussling with the gun.
At the pharmacy, Faith and Lily have ice cream, and Mei asks Lily whether she wants more. Faith says she can have more than one scoop today, because it is a special day. Ned comes in with a delivery and asks them why the long faces. He tells Lily he is glad her grandmother is feeling better. Lily says she is happy too, and then asks how her grandmother will feel better. Faith tells Rufus, Lily's stuffed animal, to remind Lily every day how much Faith loves her.
At Lee's office, Maisie complains about Montague being invited to Hope Valley in the first place, and about how much secrecy has surrounded the resort. Lee agrees that there has been a lack of transparency, and tells her that he is having doubts about the resort moving forward.
At the Granville Prison, Allie wanders the grounds and asks a guard to see her father, giving him her name and her father's name. The guard makes a phone call to another guard, and Allie waits.
At Lucas's office, Lee says he wants to talk about the resort. Lucas says he is concerned about the recent happenings, but notes that there is still no proof connecting the attack on Montague to the news of the resort bid. Lee thinks it is related, and says Lucas is doing everything he can to keep this clean. Lee wants to cut their losses. Lucas tells him that this is not about them, it is about the town, and calls him small-minded. Lee retorts that he and Maisie can no longer offer the governor their support, and says he believes nothing good is going to come of this. Lucas dismisses him.
As Lee leaves, Lucas has another flashback to the night of his shooting — the same fuzzy images as before.
Outside the prison, Allie sits on a bench crying as Nathan and Elizabeth pull up. She tells Nathan that she should have listened to him, because Dylan did not want to see her. Nathan hugs her while Elizabeth watches. Allie asks if they can go home.
At the Coulters', Rosemary tells Lee that it was lovely being at home with Goldie, but that tomorrow she is getting back to it. Lee gives her a joint mayor's statement to print in the paper the next day. Rosemary asks whether he is sure about it. Lee says the obvious conclusion is usually the right one, and that he believes the resort is taking Hope Valley in the wrong direction.
At the saloon, Mike tells Mei the kinds of food his mom likes. Mei says she really wants his mom to like her food, and her. She wonders what it was like to raise six children, since she only had her brother. Mike says it was noisy and sometimes annoying, but that they had their fun times and never lacked for company. Mei says she likes the sound of that. Mike says that is a relief, because Maisie is bringing his other four sisters as well.
Elizabeth thanks Rosemary for looking after Jack the day before, and fills her in on Granville and on Dylan refusing to see Allie. Rosemary says it is so good that Elizabeth was there, and Elizabeth says that she really cares for Allie. Rosemary tells her that Nathan needs her just as much as Allie does — perhaps even more. Elizabeth says that she needs him too.
At Nathan and Allie's, Nathan asks Allie whether she wants to talk about it. Allie says that she was right there and that Dylan could not even be bothered to meet her. Nathan tells her that it is his problem, not hers, but she does not want to hear it. He says that maybe Dylan was embarrassed or ashamed, because he knew that he had let Allie down. Nathan tells her that he cannot imagine his life without her in it, that watching her grow up has been the greatest joy of his life, and that he is proud of how smart, thoughtful and fearless she is — which, he says, she gets from her mother.
Allie says that sounds a lot like her dad. Nathan leans over and touches her hand, and tells her, “forever.”
At the saloon, Mike is cleaning up when Bill comes in with the newspaper, wondering whether Lucas has seen it. Edwin asks what they are talking about, and Bill hands over the paper with the note from the co-mayors. Lucas walks over, sees it, grabs the paper and storms back into his office, tearing it to shreds. He has another memory of the night of his shooting: the figure he sees in the rain under the umbrella is Jeanette, there to congratulate him on winning governor. There is another shadowy figure with her, a Mr. Shaw, who she claims has some business he would like to discuss.
Lucas says that this is not the place or the time and turns away — and then Mr. Shaw pulls a gun on Jeanette. Lucas attacks him, trying to get the gun, and it fires, shooting Lucas.
Jeanette comes into Lucas's office, and he tells her that she was there when he was shot. She says that in a way she is relieved he remembered, and tells him that Mr. Shaw forced her to take him to Lucas. Once Shaw found out about her personal connection, he threatened to kill her if she did not help him pressure Lucas into letting him run rum through the territory. The publicity around the shooting scared Shaw off, but when Lucas announced the open bidding for the resort, Shaw became interested in it as a way to launder money.
Jeanette tells Lucas that Casimir Shaw is behind her bid — one of the world's most wanted criminals — and that he had Montague beaten to eliminate the competition. She says that Lucas has to cooperate with Shaw, because if he does not, they are both as good as dead.
In town, Elizabeth and Nathan greet each other, and Elizabeth asks after Allie. Nathan says he does not know how they would have done any of this without her. Allie needs the two of them right now, and Elizabeth tells him she is here for them. Nathan leaves to speak with Lucas, but first asks whether Elizabeth and Little Jack would join him for dinner that night.
At the saloon, Edwin, Lee, Rosemary, Bill and Nathan gather to see Lucas. Lee says that before Lucas says anything, he wants it noted that he gave the governor fair warning about the mayor's statement. Lucas agrees and says he appreciates it, and that it is in these moments that you learn who your true friends are. He apologises to Rosemary for his reaction to her article about Montague, and the group asks him what is going on. Lucas tells them that he has cancelled the resort. Edwin is shocked; the others are relieved.
Lucas says that certain information has come to light and that is all he can say at the moment. Rosemary asks for an exclusive for the paper, and he says he will prepare a statement. Henry asks whether Bill and Nathan can speak with Lucas in his office.
At the café, Lily shows her grandma around the place where she has been staying. Faith says she hopes Mrs. Watson might let Lily stay overnight sometimes, and Mrs. Watson agrees. Then Lily starts crying and says she wants to stay with Faith. Mrs. Watson tells Faith that she is worried about what is best for Lily, and that with her heart the way it is, her energy is not what it was. She asks whether Lily can stay with Faith. Faith says yes, of course, and hugs her. Faith tells Lily that she can live here if that is what she really wants, and Lily thanks her grandma.
The two of them agree to a standing Sunday dinner date.
Lucas tells Henry, Bill and Nathan that his assailant was Casimir Shaw. Bill says that now they have Lucas as a witness, they can put Shaw behind bars. Lucas says not so fast — there are other things to consider, such as Jeanette's safety. Bill says he is worried about Lucas's own safety, and Nathan offers to talk to Jeanette to see what she knows. Lucas asks them to leave that to him, and asks that the news stay amongst them for now.
At the saloon, Maisie, Mrs. Hickam and the other four sisters come in. Mike introduces Mei to his mom, and the group helps themselves to dinner. At the table, Mei watches anxiously to see how they will like her food. Mike tells her that they love her food and her — and so does he. Mei says she loves him too, and they share a kiss.
At Elizabeth's house, Elizabeth, Nathan, Allie and Little Jack have dinner together. Jack asks Nathan for another riding lesson tomorrow, and Nathan says he would love to but that tomorrow is Bill's turn. Allie asks whether she can come and watch, and then says that afterwards they can get ice cream.
Jeanette drives herself and Lucas to the edge of town. He tells her that this is where they say goodbye, and that he has cancelled the resort. Jeanette warns him that he does not want to mess with Shaw. Lucas says he is trying to protect her: she needs to go someplace and disappear. It is either that, or he will have her arrested as an accomplice in his shooting. He tells her to leave, find someplace safe, and stay there. Jeanette says that she only offered to front the bid on the resort because she was looking out for him, the way she always has.
Lucas tells her to consider them even, and says goodbye.

Analysis
Character Development
Elizabeth Thornton
Elizabeth learns that Allie has gone to Granville Prison alone, travels with Nathan to the station and then to the prison, and is the one who tells him Allie will be all right.
Confirmed in the episode: Elizabeth tells Nathan at the station that Allie is smart and resourceful and is going to be okay, and she tells Rosemary that she really cares for Allie and that she needs Nathan too.
Interpretation: Elizabeth's role in this episode is to hold a line she cannot enforce. She cannot make Allie forgive Nathan or make Nathan tell the truth any faster, so she does the only thing available: she shows up, twice, and says the reassuring thing out loud. The episode also moves her own thread one notch by having her admit to Rosemary, unprompted, that she needs Nathan.
Nathan Grant
Nathan learns from Angela that Allie has gone to Granville Prison, waits two hours for the next train with Elizabeth, and is turned away with Allie when Dylan refuses to see her.
Confirmed in the episode: Nathan tells Elizabeth that he should have told Allie the full truth about Dylan and that there is nothing redeemable about Dylan, and he tells Allie that watching her grow up has been the greatest joy of his life.
Interpretation: Nathan's protection has now visibly failed, and the episode makes him watch it happen rather than fix it. He tells Allie the truth only after she has already been hurt by it, and the scene at the house ends with him saying “forever” because that is the one promise he can still keep. The episode leaves him still refusing to let Allie near Dylan, so his position is honest but unresolved.
Lucas Bouchard
Lucas recovers the memory of the night he was shot, learns that Casimir Shaw was behind it and behind Jeanette's bid, cancels the resort, and tells his inner circle before ordering Jeanette out of town.
Confirmed in the episode: Lucas tells Henry, Bill and Nathan that his assailant was Casimir Shaw and that the news must stay amongst them for now, and he tells Jeanette that he has cancelled the resort and that she must disappear or be arrested.
Interpretation: This is the episode where Lucas stops managing the resort story and starts paying for it. He tears up the co-mayors' statement, breaks with Lee, and then cancels the project and takes the political hit himself instead of handing Jeanette over. The episode does not confirm what the cancellation costs him, but it does show him choosing the town over the deal.
Allie Grant
Allie takes the train to Granville Prison on her own to see Dylan Parks, is refused, and is brought home by Nathan and Elizabeth.
Confirmed in the episode: Allie tells Angela that she is going to see her biological father and that the prison will let her in because she is his daughter, and after the refusal she tells Nathan that she should have listened to him.
Interpretation: Allie spends the episode acting on the belief that being someone's daughter entitles her to be seen. The episode takes that belief away from her in a single afternoon, and the fact that she asks to go home rather than argue is the change. She is not reconciled to Nathan's position; she has simply run out of a plan.
Faith Carter
Faith spends the day with Lily, and Mrs. Watson asks her to take Lily in; Faith agrees and tells Lily she can live with her.
Confirmed in the episode: Faith says Lily can have more than one scoop because it is a special day, and she says yes when Mrs. Watson asks whether Lily can stay with her and tells Lily she can live there if that is what she wants.
Interpretation: Faith's arc in this episode converts a temporary arrangement into a permanent one. The episode frames it as Mrs. Watson's decision rather than Faith's request, which matters: Faith is handed the thing she wanted instead of asking for it, and she takes it without hesitation.
Lee Coulter
Lee tells Lucas he is having doubts about the resort, then tells him to his face that he and Maisie are withdrawing their support.
Confirmed in the episode: Lee tells Maisie he is having doubts about the resort moving forward, tells Lucas that this is not about them but that nothing good will come of it, and says he and Maisie can no longer offer their support.
Interpretation: Lee has been the governor's closest ally and this episode ends that. The break is not about the resort's finances; it is about transparency, which Lee says out loud to Maisie before he says it to Lucas. He also hands Rosemary a joint mayor's statement to print, so the rupture becomes public rather than private.
Jeanette Aucoin
Jeanette tells Lucas that Shaw forced her to help him and that Shaw is behind her bid, and is then told to leave Hope Valley or be arrested.
Confirmed in the episode: Jeanette tells Lucas that Mr. Shaw forced her to take him to Lucas and threatened to kill her, that Casimir Shaw is behind her bid and had Montague beaten, and that Lucas must cooperate or they are both as good as dead.
Interpretation: Jeanette is the episode's reveal: not a victim and not simply a villain, but someone who chose the story she told. She explains herself as having acted to protect Lucas, and the episode leaves that claim standing without endorsing it — Lucas's response is to give her a way out rather than a hearing.

When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 10 Ending Explained
Spoilers below
This section discusses the ending of "What Goes Around" in detail. Stop here if you haven't watched the episode.
“What Goes Around” ends with Lucas and Jeanette at the edge of town, not with an arrest or a clean answer. Lucas tells Jeanette that this is where they say goodbye, that he has cancelled the resort, and that she needs to leave and find someplace safe to disappear; if she does not, he will have her arrested as an accomplice in his shooting. Jeanette tells him that she only fronted the bid because she was looking out for him, and Lucas tells her to consider them even and says goodbye. The episode does not show where she goes or whether she stays gone, and that is left unresolved.
What the episode does confirm is that Casimir Shaw shot Lucas. Lucas tells Henry, Bill and Nathan that his assailant was Shaw, and Bill says that with Lucas as a witness they can put Shaw behind bars. That does not happen in this episode. Lucas asks them to leave the matter to him and to keep it amongst themselves for now, which means Shaw is still at large and unarrested at the end of the hour. The episode does not confirm that Shaw will retaliate, that Lucas will have to cooperate with him, or how the warrant that follows in the next episode is served — none of that is established here.
Two threads are closed cleanly. Allie's trip to Granville is resolved by refusal: Dylan Parks does not see her, she comes home crying, and Nathan and Elizabeth bring her back. Whether Allie will try again is not confirmed. And Lily's future is settled: Mrs. Watson asks Faith to take Lily in because of her heart, Faith says yes, and Lily is told she can live with Faith. Lucas's own standing is the loose thread the episode leaves for the finale: he has cancelled the project and apologised to Rosemary, but the episode does not confirm what it costs him politically.
