Barry Dort

Barry Dort becomes principal of Nevermore Academy at the point when the school most wants a steady public face. He presents himself as an administrator able to manage outcasts, donors and scandal in equal measure, and his first significant act is to make Wednesday the unwilling face of the school, a decision that tells the students exactly how he intends to use them.

Behind the assemblies and the fundraising he is running something else. Bianca and Ajax, while trying to conceal a secret of their own, overhear a suspicious phone call he makes, and that is the first thread the students pull. Wednesday's investigation around the school gala turns up dirt on him, and a flashback supplies the missing piece: Dort founded the Morning Song network with Arnold Hunt. By the end of the season the picture is complete, the principal is the founder and the mind behind the Morning Song cult, and the school he was hired to run is the ground he chose for it.

Dort inverts the usual Nevermore arrangement. The adults at the school are generally ineffectual or compromised, but he is neither: he is competent, organised and deliberate, and the threat he poses comes from authority exercised properly in the wrong hands rather than from chaos.

Barry Dort is a main cast character in Wednesday. Portrayed by Steve Buscemi, the character appears in 16 episodes across 2 seasons. First seen in S1E1, “Wednesday's Child Is Full of Woe”, and last seen in S2E8, “This Means Woe”.
