Will Trent Season 2 Episode 2 Recap
Faith arrives at Georgia State Prison, sent by Amanda to keep watch over Will. Warden Hardly meets her and reports that Will is already talking to James Ulster; the warden is skeptical the detectives will find anyone inside willing to talk. Faith asks to see Miles Highsmith — Arthur's son from the bombing — who stays scared and silent: he writes on Faith's notepad that he believes the walls talk, and that his attackers wear masks so he cannot identify them.
Will's meeting with James pays out: initially uncooperative, James agrees to help flush out the prisoners involved in the bombing ring. With James's help, Will and Faith narrow to Mackie, who has the phone used to message the bombers; Mackie snitches on his so-called boss, Flash. Flash, cornered in the clinic, denies involvement and refuses to speak privately rather than be branded a snitch, and Will has him moved to solitary.
Around the case: Ormewood, staying home, bonds with his son over an undone science project and raises the divorce question with him; later he apologizes to Gina for being a terrible husband and promises to work on the marriage if she will hang in there — she asks for time. Angie and Amanda rescue Joey from a party thrown by his new boss, Walsh, who pressured him into taking drugs; Amanda concludes Angie is ready to return to the field. Afterward Angie runs into Crystal, arrested at Walsh's party and abandoned by her mother, and takes her new number, promising to reach out.
Inside the prison, Mackie is killed. Will stays to keep the scene from being contaminated; Faith rushes to solitary and finds Flash dead in a staged suicide. The two circle back to their clinic interview and spot something in the footage between nurse Edina and inmate Jack Richards — a serial killer who preyed on housewives. The warden is asked to fetch Edina, but the system shows she is still inside; she is helping Jack escape.
The lights go out mid-conversation. James brings up Will's dead mother, calls their bond family, and hands him a name: an uncle, the only living relative on his mother's side. Will's vision of his younger self returns — a bloody scene, a boy running — before he threatens James into giving up the message Edina sent Jack: the two lovers are escaping through the ambulance bay.
It goes wrong. The warden collapses into cardiac arrest, and Faith talks another prisoner into helping her try to save him, reaching Will by phone to warn him of Edina's plan. Will reaches the ambulance bay first and finds Edina dead — James was using her all along. James threatens to kill Miles, whom he is holding hostage; Will uses Faith's arrival as a distraction to save the boy. Jack corners Will in the fight, and James appears and kills him, presenting it as a gift to Trent. With Mackie, Flash and Jack dead, James is positioned to take over the prison.
At home, Nico tries to draw Will out; Will says he is fine — it is the work he signed up for — and volunteers to teach Nico how to fix things around the house. What he does not say: he is already looking into the uncle James named, Antonio Miranda.

Will Trent Season 2 Episode 2 Ending Explained
Spoilers below
This section discusses the ending of "It's the Work I Signed Up For" in detail. Stop here if you haven't watched the episode.
The prison end of the bombing case closes in blood: Mackie and Flash, the two inmates who could trace the extortion ring's inside connections, are dead — one killed outright, one in a staged suicide — and the attempted breakout through the ambulance bay leaves nurse Edina dead and serial killer Jack Richards killed by James himself. James frames Jack's death as something he did for Will; with his rivals gone, he is positioned to claim control inside Georgia State Prison.
The quieter reveal lands last: James gives Will the name of his only living relative on his mother's side — his uncle, Lucy Morales' brother, Antonio Miranda. Will threatens the answer out of James about Edina's message first, then, at home, quietly starts a case file on his uncle. The episode ends with the paternity question — whether James is Will's father — still open, and Will chasing the family lead James handed him instead of the DNA test he is afraid to take.
