Overview
Episode Summary
Will and the sheriff's deputies reach a trailer park where a massacre has just happened; a man opens fire on them and is taken out, and Will finds a little boy, Theo Davis, hiding at the scene — terrified, mute, the only witness. Will feeds him, nicknames him “Scoot,” and learns a third man was present at the shooting; when a Child Services officer arrives to place the boy in temporary foster care, Will refuses and takes him home. Theo asks for a bedtime story, says his mom “had to go away but will be coming back,” and gives Will their names.
The case: financial records show the victims came into money two days before the attack, the wounded shooter leads the team onward, and surveillance footage from a minimart narrows the field. At the grandmother Kathleen Marigold's store, Theo recognizes his uncle Deacon as the third man from the shooting; when Kathleen, Deacon, and Theo's uncle turn on Will, the truth detonates — Kathleen killed Theo's family to get custody of the boy.
Will saves Theo and takes out all three, and after Child Services runs the background check he promised, Will says goodbye and sends Theo back to his frantic mother.
Around the case, Faith — raw from killing O'Hara — pretends she is fine until she breaks down, with her mother Evelyn, in town confronting Amanda over an old investigation that cost her job, there for her. Angie's thread darkens: she warns Lenny's stepdaughter Crystal at school, is confronted by Lenny's fiancée at the station, ignores Franklin's warning that she could lose her career, tells Lenny to his face that sooner or later she will kill him — and then buys drugs from a dealer.

Will Trent Season 1 Episode 10 Recap
Will and the sheriffs arrive at a trailer-park massacre and sense something is off; a man starts shooting at them, they return fire and take out the shooter, and Will discovers a little boy hiding at the scene — Theo, who witnessed everything but is too terrified to talk. Faith calls in, and Will briefs her: the dead men's history suggests a drug war, but the drugs are missing and the only witness is an unidentified child.
Will bonds with the boy using food, nicknames him “Scoot,” and learns a third man was present at the shooting; his interrogation of a known associate of one of the victims yields little. When a Child Protective Services officer arrives to take Theo to a temporary foster home, Will refuses and takes him home instead. Theo asks for a bedtime story, says his mom “had to go away but will be coming back,” and gives Will his and his mom's names. Will calls Angie to check in and tell her about Theo; she has been MIA lately — even Ormewood finds it odd.
Evelyn Mitchell visits Faith, finds the house a complete mess, and refuses to leave; Faith shuts down her attempts to help. Faith reviews minimart surveillance near the crime scene, and financial records show the victims came into a lot of money two days before the attack. The wounded shooter wakes from surgery and leads the team onward; Evelyn confronts Amanda about a betrayal — Amanda led an investigation into her department without warning, and although Evelyn was clean, she lost her job.
Theo's grandmother is located; Will promises to hand Theo over only after Child Services runs a background check on her.
Angie and Ormewood look further into Lenny: Angie contacts his stepdaughter Crystal at school to warn her that Lenny is bad news; Crystal doesn't believe her and finds it uncomfortable, and Angie leaves her card. Lenny's fiancée shows up at the station to confront Angie; Franklin steps between them, then warns Angie she could lose her career if she keeps going like this. Angie ignores the advice and keeps stalking Lenny; Lenny shows no remorse for what he did to her, and Angie warns him that sooner or later she will kill him — then goes to a drug dealer and buys drugs.
At Kathleen Marigold's store, Theo recognizes his uncle Deacon as the man who was at the shooting; Will hides Theo and Betty and calls for backup. Theo's frantic mother arrives at the station, where Faith tries to calm her — the woman has long been trying to regain custody of Theo and had lied to the police. At the store, Kathleen, Deacon, and the uncle turn on Will; the grandmother killed Theo's family to get custody of the boy.
Will saves Theo and takes out all three, and with the case solved he says goodbye to Theo and sends him back with his mom — while Faith, alone at last, breaks down with her mother there for her.

Analysis
Character Development
Will Trent
Will refuses to let Child Services take Theo, brings him home, feeds him, gives him a bedtime story, and only agrees to hand him over after a background check on the grandmother — then says goodbye and returns him to his mother. Interpretation: the de facto fatherhood arc plays Will's own foster childhood against the family Theo still has.
Faith Mitchell
Faith pretends she is fine after killing O'Hara, then breaks down — with her mother Evelyn there for her; Franklin's advice to talk to somebody precedes it. Interpretation: the shooting's weight lands here, and Faith's resistance to help gives way to her mother's care.
Angie Polaski
Angie warns Crystal at school, is confronted by Lenny's fiancée, ignores Franklin's career warning, threatens Lenny to his face, and buys drugs from a dealer. Interpretation: Angie's revenge course and her sobriety collide, and the episode leaves her at the edge.
Amanda Wagner
Evelyn confronts Amanda about leading an investigation into her department without warning — Evelyn was clean but lost her job. Interpretation: Amanda's institutional loyalty is shown costing a friendship, with no reconciliation staged.

Spoilers below
This section discusses the ending of "Pterodactyls Can Fly" in detail. Stop here if you haven't watched the episode.
The massacre resolves into a custody murder. Kathleen Marigold, Theo's grandmother, had his family killed to get custody of the boy; at her store Theo recognizes his uncle Deacon as the third man from the shooting, and when Kathleen, Deacon, and the uncle turn on Will, he saves Theo and takes out all three. After the background check he promised Child Services, Will says goodbye and sends Theo back to his frantic mother, Kylie Davis — whose long custody fight and lies to the police are acknowledged but not punished within the episode.
The personal threads are left raw. Faith, who has pretended to be fine since killing O'Hara, finally breaks down with her mother there for her. And Angie — warned by Franklin, confronted by Lenny's fiancée, unheard by Crystal — tells Lenny she will kill him sooner or later and then buys drugs from a dealer. The episode ends with her revenge course and her sobriety both hanging.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who killed Theo Davis's family?
His grandmother, Kathleen Marigold, who arranged the trailer-park massacre to get custody of Theo. She, Theo's uncle Deacon, and another relative turn on Will at her store, and Will saves Theo and takes out all three.
Why does Will keep Theo instead of calling Child Services?
Will, strongly opposed to leaving the traumatized boy with strangers, refuses the temporary foster placement and takes him home — feeding him, giving him a bedtime story, and insisting any handover to the grandmother wait for a background check.
Is Theo's mother alive?
Yes. Theo tells Will his mom “had to go away but will be coming back,” and after the case is solved his frantic mother — long fighting to regain custody and having lied to the police — is reunited with him.
How does Faith handle having killed O'Hara?
She pretends she is fine until the episode's end, when she has a breakdown — with her mother Evelyn, who is in town confronting Amanda, there for her. Franklin had advised her to talk to somebody.
What does Evelyn Mitchell confront Amanda about?
Amanda led an investigation into Evelyn's department without any heads-up; although Evelyn was clean, she lost her job, and the betrayal still hurts.
Does Angie buy drugs in this episode?
Yes. After warning Crystal at school, being confronted by Lenny's fiancée, ignoring Franklin's career warning, and telling Lenny to his face that sooner or later she will kill him, Angie goes to a drug dealer and buys drugs.
