Thomas Fitzpatrick

Thomas Fitzpatrick is the child Mickey Fitzpatrick is raising when the series begins. He is the reason Mickey's two investigations keep colliding — she patrols the neighborhood where she is also looking for the boy's mother, and she has to arrange care for him while chasing leads the department has not authorized.

Thomas's biological father is Simon, Mickey's ex, who has reappeared by the premiere. Mickey keeps the truth about his parentage from Truman until episode 7.

Mrs. Mahon, the family's neighbour, watches Thomas — she is the one who relays the red pickup truck detail that sends Mickey to the store footage.

A flashback in episode 6 reveals Thomas's biological mother is not Mickey but her sister Kacey, and that Simon slept with Kacey while she was living with them. Mickey is his legal guardian.

Thomas is present through the season's domestic stretches rather than its procedural ones: he stays with Mickey at Truman's house in episode 2, is at the Thanksgiving table in episode 3 where a cousin says Mickey lies a lot, and is the reason Mickey needs a neighbour she trusts when a lead breaks late.

He is not the one asking the questions, but both of the season's biggest secrets are about him — who his father is, and who his mother is.

Thomas is not the investigator in this story, but he is what the investigation is for. Mickey's refusal to let the cases go is bound up with keeping him, and every unsanctioned lead she runs is balanced against who is watching him that night — usually Mrs. Mahon, sometimes Truman.

His parentage is the season's slow reveal, and it is revealed at his own expense. Episode 4 exposes Simon as his father at Thomas's birthday party, where Simon leaves after a fight with Gee Pop and Mickey. Episode 6 goes further: Thomas's biological mother is Kacey, Mickey's sister, and Simon conceived him with Kacey while she was living with Mickey and Simon.

What Mickey does with that knowledge is its own thread. She keeps it from Truman until episode 7, when she tells him both Thomas's parentage and Simon's betrayal — the confession that briefly repairs their trust.

By the finale the truth is out in the open and the family has reassembled around him. Kacey is alive and has had her second child, Gee is in the household, and Thomas meets his newborn sister.

He is, in other words, the one character the season's two revelations were about and the one it never asks to react to them: his parentage is uncovered, confessed and absorbed entirely by the adults around him.
