Ransom Canyon Season 1 Episode 6: We Need to Talk About Reid

Ransom Canyon episode 6 opens on a flashback to the night Randall died: a mysterious figure checks on the boy in his badly mangled car, then rushes back to a truck and drives off. In the present, Yancy plans to spend his rodeo winnings on a new tractor for Cap, which charms Ellie — until she sees him arriving at the care facility where Ruth Fuller lives. Kai tells her a young man has been spending time with Ruth, allegedly her and Cap's grandson; a background check then shows Yancy's criminal record has mysteriously been sealed.

Ellie calls Yancy out on the nursing-home sighting, and he lies that he visits Ruth out of empathy. She cancels their date and instead goes to visit Freddie in jail. Paula Jo, still in town, wants to use Quinn's dance hall for pipeline business, and in setting up the meeting spills that she slept with Staten at the rodeo. Staten and Davis both arrive at the dance hall, and Davis lands a low blow — telling Staten that taking in his nephew will not bring his dead son back — sending Staten storming out.

Davis admits to Quinn he is jealous that Staten called her, of all people, to bail him out; Quinn admits her own jealousy over Paula Jo. In her meeting with a city councilman and a Texas water development board member, Paula Jo orders salination tests on Staten's wells and pushes a vote to end grandfathered wells, forcing Staten to retrofit every well at a cost of millions and pushing him toward the pipeline. Quinn, who overheard, confronts her, and Paula Jo threatens the dance hall's liquor license.

Staten shows up at Davis's house to drop off Reid's things, and Davis apologizes for his words and admits Staten hooking up with Paula Jo bugs him. Staten tells Davis it is time to make peace with Reid, so he does not regret it the way Staten regrets Randall. Lauren tells Lucas she has not spoken to Reid since the breakup, and Lucas tells her he wants to attend the University of Texas to be near her. At the lake, the couple slips away to go skinny-dipping, and Lucas realizes something is in the water — a truck.

When law enforcement arrives, Lucas tells Sheriff Dan the pickup under the water is blue. Staten arrives and realizes the vehicle is missing a piece of its fender, just like the piece he found earlier in the season after Randall's crash.
