Ransom Canyon Season 1 Episode 5: I Love a Good Secret

Ransom Canyon episode 5 centers on the tri-county rodeo, where Yancy is competing in the All-Around to win the $20,000 that will get Freddie and his cronies off his back and out of Ransom. Freddie threatens to reveal Yancy's real identity if he does not pay, and later, after Yancy's first strong ride, demands he throw the final round so Freddie can win a bigger bet — threatening to kidnap Ellie if he refuses.

Quinn and Davis are together after their night in episode 4; Davis suggests a trip to New York so she can audition, but she wants to leave that part of her life behind. The next morning Davis's fiery ex-wife Paula Jo arrives — she now sits on the Austin Water & Power board — and insults Quinn while checking on her son Reid. Paula Jo also visits Staten with tequila, thanking him for taking in Reid and making suggestive reference to their romantic past.

Reid and Lucas, now close after the cattle drive, watch rodeo clips and hang out together; Lauren finds it weird and Lucas resents that she wants to hide their relationship and use Reid as a cover. Reid is also fielding panicked texts from Tim about Sheriff Dan — who now believes someone ran Randall off the road — questioning the accident. When the boys run into the sheriff, they give alibis: Tim was home, Reid was with Lauren.

Yancy does well in his early rides, with Ellie and Cap watching, and Ellie gives him a kiss that Kai spots. Freddie tells Yancy he would make more than twenty thousand by betting against him, but Yancy refuses to throw the tournament and wins the All-Around. As Freddie comes up angry, Kai and the other sheriffs arrest him — Cap identifies Freddie as the Angus dealer who sold him Staten's cattle, and Freddie is hauled away in handcuffs, warning Ellie that she does not even know Yancy's real name.

Davis promises Quinn that Paula Jo is in the past. But Staten, who has clearly struggled watching Quinn with Davis, finally confesses at the rodeo: he knows he is broken and grieving, but if someday he is not, it will be because of her, and he asks her to be with him instead of Davis. In tears, she tells him it is too late and rushes off. Soothing his sorrows with drink later, Staten encounters a tempting Paula Jo, and the episode ends with the two of them getting intimate in a car.
