Fire Country Season 3 Episode 9 Recap

The Chezem Valley fire is burning out of control. Bode and Audrey shelter in a residential pool as the flames close in, with Bode holding Audrey above water because she cannot swim, until a helicopter water drop pushes the fire back. Their radios are down and their gear is destroyed, so they split up; Audrey finds a tractor with the keys still inside and they finally reach someone on the radio. Sharon answers, tells them to get back to base, and leaves out the fact that Gabriela is missing.

Gabriela had walked off the job during the fire after fighting with Jake, and Manny left Three Rock to find her. Eve calls Sharon on a cell phone to report it, because putting it on the radios would risk Manny being sent back to prison. Sharon blames herself, puts Jake in charge of the scene, and goes with Vince to look for the two missing firefighters. Manny finds Gabriela in the woods, injured and without her gear, and they take shelter in an abandoned brick bathroom, where Gabriela tells him he has been self-righteous instead of supportive.

They hear a car alarm and find Sharon and Vince, who have crashed their truck; Vince set off the alarm so the pair could find them.

At the Edwards ranch, Eve helps her father put in the irrigation system, which saves the farm after the water ran out. Elroy agrees to help find her friends and lends the group horses, riding with them himself. Bode, Eve, Jake and Elroy reach the stranded group and bring everyone home.

Bode sends Audrey to the hospital, where she is found to have lung damage from the water she swallowed, and later takes flowers to her rather than to Gabriela. Gabriela visits Manny at Three Rock and says she will own up to walking off the job. Walter Leone arrives at the station saying he is there for Bode's graduation, which took place a week earlier.

Analysis

Character Development

Bode Leone

Bode keeps Audrey afloat in the lake, leads the escape from the fire, and takes flowers to Audrey rather than Gabriela (F02, F03, F20). Interpretation: Bode carrying the flowers past Gabriela is the episode's confirmation that he has taken his own earlier answer seriously rather than waiting for hers to change.

Gabriela Perez

Gabriela walks off the job, is found injured in the woods, tells Manny he has been self-righteous, and later says she will own up to walking off the job (F08, F12, F14, F21). Interpretation: Gabriela naming her own breach is the first time this season she accepts a consequence rather than reacting to one, which is what makes her recovery plausible.

Manny Perez

Manny leaves Three Rock to find Gabriela, shelters with her, and listens rather than arguing back (F09, F12, F13, F14). Interpretation: Manny absorbing Gabriela's accusations instead of defending himself is what turns the rescue into the conversation they could not have at the camp.

Sharon Leone

Sharon withholds the news that Gabriela is missing, puts Jake in charge of the scene, and goes with Vince to find the missing firefighters (F07, F11, F15). Interpretation: Sharon leaving the command post for a rescue is the same instinct that made her free Manny in the premiere, applied to a situation she helped create by promising to watch Gabriela.

Eve Edwards

Eve helps her father install the ranch irrigation system to save the farm, and Elroy lends the group horses (F17, F18, F19). Interpretation: Eve's ranch knowledge being what saves the property is what finally earns Elroy's cooperation, turning professional competence into the basis of reconciliation.

Fire Country Season 3 Episode 9 Ending Explained

Spoilers below

This section discusses the ending of "Coming in Hot" in detail. Stop here if you haven't watched the episode.

The episode resolves its emergencies: the water drop and the tractor get Bode and Audrey out, Manny finds Gabriela and the four stranded firefighters are brought home on Elroy's horses, and the Edwards farm is saved. Bode takes flowers to Audrey rather than Gabriela.

What it leaves unresolved is the cost of the night. Manny left Three Rock against his parole conditions, and the episode does not confirm what that will do to his sentence. Gabriela says she will own up to walking off the job but the episode does not show the consequence, and it does not confirm whether she and Bode are finished. Walter Leone's arrival a week late is also unexplained: the episode does not establish whether he has a cognitive problem or was given the wrong date.

Why did Manny leave Three Rock?

He went to find Gabriela after she walked off the job and into the fire zone, which risks his sentence (F08, F09).
