Fire Country Season 3 Episode 12: I'm the One Who Just Goes Away

Eve and Gabriela run a family reunification day at Station 42, busing in the children of Three Rock inmates to see the work their fathers do. Cole Rodman's daughters and his teenage son Logan visit; Logan is unhappy about the trip, inflates a rescue boat in the storage room, and later comes out to his father with Eve's help. Cole tells him to love whoever he loves and coaches him on how to flirt with his crush.

Audrey does her laundry at the Leones' house in exchange for watching Walter, who mistakes her for Vince's dead daughter, Riley; Audrey does not correct him. Audrey then helps the Leones take a new family photograph.

Bode and Jake go to Trinity National Forest to tag fire-risk trees. They put out an unattended campfire and are then caught in a rockslide that buries a camper: Rafael, a paediatrician from Argentina who had been camping alone after the death of a patient. A second rockslide injures Bode's leg, and Jake walks eight miles round trip to get help. Rafael asks Bode to tell his partner that it is all right to fall in love again and to watch the stars with him, and he dies before Jake returns with the rescue team.

Bode and Jake carry Rafael's body out of the woods and Jake calls his partner to tell her that he has died. The two of them tell the hospital that Rafael wanted to donate his organs. The family gathers at Smokey's at the end of the day.

The station thread closes with the family reunification day ending well enough that it could become a regular programme, and with Audrey helping the Leones take a new family photograph at Smokey's.

What the episode does not confirm is what Rafael's death does to Bode. He is noticeably withdrawn at the bar, but the episode leaves unresolved whether he will process it or repeat the pattern that followed his sister's death, and it does not establish what will happen with the pills or with his relationship with Audrey. Walter's diagnosis is also left where Episode 11 put it: the family has early signs of dementia and no confirmed prognosis.
