Truman Dawes

Truman Dawes is a Philadelphia police officer and Mickey Fitzpatrick's patrol partner when the series begins. Their partnership is already personal: Mickey and Thomas are staying at Truman's house in episode 2, and he is angry that she ghosted him.

Truman is the partner Mickey trusts with the parts of the case she cannot take to the department. He surfaces the lead on Dock from Kacey's social media, works the S.O.K. Holdings thread alongside Mickey, and follows Simon with her when they still lack evidence. He is also the first person Mickey goes to after she sees the footage of Kacey getting into the red pickup truck.

Truman's position erodes as Mickey's investigation deepens. He is on medical leave for part of the season, which is when Eddie Lafferty becomes Mickey's partner. When suspicion briefly turns toward him, Simon's alibi and Kacey's clarification of Emily's "partner" comment clear him in episode 7.

Truman and Mickey sleep together in episode 5. He stands by her when she tells him Thomas's parentage and Simon's betrayal. What he cannot accept is the gun.

Truman is also the partner Mickey reaches by silent alarm in episode 3, when Dock corners her and threatens her, and the one who follows Simon with her in episode 5 when they see him solicit women but still lack evidence. He is on medical leave during part of the season — the stretch in which Eddie Lafferty becomes Mickey's partner.

Truman enters the season as the partner who gives Mickey's instinct somewhere to land. He works her unsanctioned leads without demanding she take them through channels, which is why she brings him the parts of the case she cannot file.

His arc tightens as Mickey's methods escalate. He is present for the Dock lead, the S.O.K. Holdings thread and the surveillance of Simon, and he absorbs the cost of her fabricated identification when Dock's alibi clears the suspect. Their relationship turns romantic in episode 5 even as they disagree about the Simon theory, and Mickey's mistrust and Truman's hidden gambling complicate it.

Episode 7 clears Truman as a suspect and repairs the trust between them — he supports Mickey after she tells him about Thomas and Simon. Episode 8 undoes it. Mickey follows him and finds he was rescuing an overdosing woman, not killing, but the damage is already done: he tells her he cannot come back from her pulling a gun on him.

Truman's arc is the season's measure of what the investigation costs the people standing next to Mickey. He is cleared twice — once by an alibi, once by Mickey's own surveillance — and neither clearance saves the relationship.

Philadelphia police officer and Mickey Fitzpatrick's patrol partner, who works her unsanctioned leads with her and becomes her romantic partner

Truman's defining relationship is with Mickey Fitzpatrick: patrol partner, then romantic partner, then the person who cannot forgive her. He works with Detective Davis Danjarat and Sergeant Kevin Ahearn inside the department, and is the partner Mickey calls when she silent-alarms during Dock's threat in episode 3. Simon supplies the alibi that clears Truman in episode 7. Kacey's clarification that Emily meant Mickey's current partner — Eddie Lafferty — rather than Truman is what finally moves suspicion off him.
