Hired by Reenie's boyfriend Elliott to find Matt Hale — the Columbia-educated son of cupcake-chain founder Ivy Hale, who put up a $50,000 reward — Colter quickly learns the official story is cover. Matt vanished two days ago, leaving his car and phone behind, and his girlfriend Lucy is found tied up in her art studio by two Eastern European kidnappers who specifically confirmed Matt's identity before taking him.
Following Matt's trail to a shady hotel, Colter is captured by Rick Lindo (Al Sapienza), a rival mob boss who drops the bombshell that Ivy is not just a bakery owner — she is a major player in New Jersey's criminal underworld with politicians in her pocket. Lindo orders Colter killed, but one of his men, Vargas (J.J. Soria), Matt's childhood friend, secretly lets Colter go and reveals Matt was set up — someone wanted him seen with the Lindos to stir up conflict between the two factions.
