The White Lotus Season 2 Episode 4: In the Sandbox

The episode opens at dawn. Cameron wakes with Lucia and Mia still in his bed and, realizing his wife will return soon, underpays the two sex workers and ushers them out, promising the rest of the money. When Harper returns, she finds Ethan in a stupor from the previous night's drinking and discovers a condom wrapper on the sofa. Throughout the episode she asks Ethan what he did, and he lies each time, claiming they only drank - because Cameron made him promise not to tell.

Tanya and Portia are introduced to Quentin, a wealthy-seeming expat, and his 'nephew' Jack. Albie, agitated that Portia forgot their plans for Jack, begins talking with Lucia, unaware she is the sex worker his father Dominic hired. Earlier, Lucia and Mia slipped into Bert's room to change just as Bert returned, and he draws Dominic's attention to them - Dominic can only watch in horror as his son charms the two women.

Valentina, who learned that Isabella admires her, gives the receptionist an expensive gift and takes a special interest in her. Meanwhile Mia agrees to have sex with the lounge singer Giuseppe in exchange for his help breaking into the music industry. Giuseppe leads her to the hotel chapel but cannot perform, so Mia goes to Lucia's bag for a pill she believes is Viagra. The pill is something else entirely and causes Giuseppe to suffer a heart attack; he survives and is hospitalized, and Mia asks Valentina to let her sing in his absence, an idea Valentina quickly dismisses.

The final shot lingers on a painting in Albie's room of Saint Sebastian, the early Christian martyr shot with arrows - a figure sometimes read as representing same-sex desire and the suffering of a closeted person, hinting at currents still to surface.

Episode 4 does not reveal whether Ethan actually cheated or what Quentin and Jack truly want. Harper is left suspecting Ethan of infidelity based on the condom wrapper, but Ethan's account - that nothing happened beyond drinking - is neither confirmed nor disproven within the episode. Giuseppe survives his heart attack, and Mia's offer to sing remains dismissed by Valentina. The Saint Sebastian painting and Quentin's arrival are left as unresolved signals about desires and schemes still to unfold. Who dies in the season remains unknown.
