Will Trent Season 3 Episode 1 Recap

The season opens at a family barbecue: two off-duty officers leave for a bag of ice and are shot in the street. Chester Flynn is fatally wounded; his partner is rushed to the hospital. Amanda and the mayor front a press conference, Faith is named to head the investigation, she announces the attack was targeted, and the mayor enforces a curfew — while privately, the mayor and Amanda clash, and Captain Norton Cromwell's investment in the case runs deep: Chester was his close friend.

The evidence shows the assassins were lying in wait for Chester, and witnesses tie the shooters' look to a local gang. Cromwell and the mayor want gang leader Rafael Wexford in custody at once — Cromwell has already sent cars by the time Faith gets there, and the scene becomes a standoff. Raphael refuses to surrender and demands one negotiator: Will Trent.

Will, meanwhile, is leading a quiet Tennessee life with Betty — catching cheating spouses as a private investigator — wrecked by guilt over arresting Angie. Amanda, who has been quietly keeping track of him, arrives to bring him home; he refuses, until he hears Rafael asked for him by name.

At the house, Will walks in unarmed and without protective gear. He and Rafael were once close — Rafael and his grandmother gave Will a home when he aged out of foster care, and Rafael saved him once — and the reunion turns into a fistfight until Rafael's grandmother, Ms. Pearl, breaks it up. Rafael insists he is being framed; Will believes him and promises to look into it. Faith is glad to see him and furious he left without goodbye; she has taken over his office with a new partner, and as case lead she assigns the returning agent to the partial license plates — the guest gets grunt work.

The evidence keeps bending Will's way: Faith's confidential informant supports the frame-up story (and Ormewood discovers the CI's car-theft side hustle), and following a lead from Faith's new partner, Will finds the stolen car used in the shoot-out. Chester's widow confronts Ormewood over the money her husband was funneling to another woman's kid, and Ormewood later visits Angie to push her toward talking to Will, who is in bad shape. Nico, at Will's house, is too angry to welcome him back.

Will learns Chester was due to meet someone at a local restaurant. The person who shows up is Assistant District Attorney Marion Alba — told only that a cop wanted to get something off his chest and discuss immunity options. When she realizes the meeting was with the murdered Chester, she tries to leave; Will, opening up about having arrested the love of his life, convinces her he is not one of the corrupt ones and wins her trust. As reporters announce Rafael has surrendered and confessed, the mayor considers the case closed — but the team does not.

Ormewood finds Chester had been quietly supporting the family of a victim from one of his cases, and at Rafael's house Will and Faith find the laptop and the truth: Rafael's daughter was kidnapped to force his surrender and confession.

Will Trent Season 3 Episode 1 Ending Explained

Spoilers below

This section discusses the ending of "I'm a Guest Here" in detail. Stop here if you haven't watched the episode.

The premiere resolves its opening standoff only on the surface. Rafael Wexford, cornered by the mayor's rush to judgment and the kidnapping of his daughter Sunny, surrenders and confesses to a murder the evidence increasingly says he did not commit — the assassins were lying in wait for Chester Flynn, the informant contradicts the gang theory, and the stolen getaway car surfaces through Will's license-plate work.

The episode closes with the case officially closed and the team refusing to close it: Will, Amanda, Faith and Ormewood keep working, and the proof that forced Rafael's confession — his kidnapped daughter — is in their hands. Around the case, the season's personal decks are set: Will's guilt over Angie has him exiled in Tennessee until Rafael's demand drags him back; Angie, spared jail by a lenient judge, is working gated-community security and has no plans to see him; Faith has his old office and a new partner; and Will's soul-baring meeting with ADA Marion Alba plants the season's most consequential new relationship.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Will Trent leave Atlanta at the start of Season 3?

After arresting Angie at the end of Season 2, Will was wrecked by guilt and left without saying goodbye to anyone. Six months later he is living in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, working as a private detective catching cheating spouses.

Who shot the two officers in the Will Trent Season 3 premiere?

Assassins lying in wait for Officer Chester Flynn. The evidence points away from the gang the mayor blames — the informant contradicts the gang theory, the getaway car was stolen, and Rafael Wexford was framed, with his daughter kidnapped to force his confession.

Who is Rafael Wexford in Will Trent?

The leader of the Piedmont Kings and an old friend of Will's — he and his grandmother gave Will a home when he aged out of foster care, and he once saved Will's life. Played by Antwayn Hopper.

Who is Marion Alba in Will Trent Season 3?

An Assistant District Attorney, played by Gina Rodriguez. Chester Flynn was on his way to meet her about immunity when he was killed; Will's honesty about arresting Angie wins her trust, and she agrees to keep the case open.

Why does Rafael Wexford surrender and confess?

Not because he is guilty: Will and Faith discover Rafael's daughter was kidnapped to force his surrender and confession, which he makes as the mayor declares the case closed.

What is Angie's job in the Season 3 premiere?

She avoided jail time thanks to a lenient judge and is working security at a gated community while awaiting a hearing that will determine her future with the APD.

Faith has taken over Will's old office and is working with a new partner (Special Agent Gross, per TVmaze credits) — and is too proud to admit she missed Will.

Does Will and Angie reunite in Episode 1?

No. They do not share scenes; Angie tells Franklin she has no plans to run into Will, and even Ormewood's plea on Will's behalf does not change her mind.
