Sleeper Hadley

Sleeper is introduced in Season 1's Watch Your Step as an old face from Bode's prison past who joins the Three Rock fire camp. He is the man who once purposely got Bode drugs in prison and made it hard for Bode to get clean, so Bode sees him as trouble and cannot understand how a drug dealer got into the camp. Bode warns Freddy that Sleeper's favors do not come free. Sleeper gives a young inmate, Troy, a book that once had drugs hidden inside; Troy later vomits from a bad reaction, and Bode and Gabriela help him through it. Freddy asks Bode to keep the drugs quiet so no one is sent back to prison, and Bode and Freddy secretly begin gathering evidence on Sleeper to send him back. Meanwhile a root fire at a wellness retreat is fought with the camp's help, and Troy recovers, but the central tension - Bode and Freddy building their case - is left deliberately unresolved, with Sleeper warning Bode the drugs could be blamed on him and Bode's own parole left at risk.

In At the End of My Rope, Sleeper's campaign turns openly hostile. He came to the fire camp for revenge: Bode was once his right-hand man in prison, they used to run things together, and Bode did everything Sleeper asked until they fell out. Sleeper escalates by cutting Bode with a chainsaw and having him beaten, and he threatens Bode's loved ones if Bode informs on him to Manny. The episode's mine rescue - crews blast through the sealed wall to free trapped Girl Scouts alongside Jake and Eve - runs in parallel, but the Sleeper storyline resolves when Bode finds the drugs Sleeper tried to plant on Freddy and takes them to Manny; Sleeper is arrested and sent back to prison, his final words a promise of revenge.

Sleeper returns in the Season 2 premiere, Something's Coming. Six months into his sentence, Bode is confined to the Aspen block - the prison's most dangerous housing - after a false drug-racketeering allegation, and is beaten by a Sleeper associate, stitching his own wound with a technique Sharon taught him. Later, an earthquake hits Edgewater and collapses a wall on Sleeper; Bode, given the chance, spares him and secures a promise from Sleeper to clear Bode's name. Bode is returned to Three Rock. Sleeper's arc thus runs from drug-dealing menace to a defeated enemy whose only remaining leverage is the promise he makes to Bode in the rubble.
