Character Biography
Biography
Rob is a wedding choreographer, and his first appearance is as a scandal and then a suspect. In "Something Blue," bride Nora confesses she had an affair with Rob, the choreographer of her own wedding - a revelation that hands the victim's family a convenient target. The case itself is built on an heirloom: guest-posted wedding video shows Derek wearing the watch during the first dance, and the watch is gone from his body. When Captain Wagner - who knows the Hayes family through the foundation - phones Ashton with a phony update that the pond will be dredged for the watch, the implication being that if the watch turns up, the death was an accident, Ashton takes the bait and decides to plant the watch at Rob's studio to frame him. Elsbeth intercepts him there: an improvised dance number, complete with a cartwheel, shakes the watch out of his pocket, the NYPD closes in, and Rob is cleared of a murder he had nothing to do with.
Two seasons later the show brings him back the way it likes to: as a familiar face in an unrelated corner of the city. In "A Hard Nut to Crack," the famous Orphan Walk from a choreographer's runaway hit is shot live on the sidewalk outside the theater and beamed back to the audience, and the performers' route passes the doors of Harris's PT practice - where Elsbeth and Kaya meet Rob, the choreographer Elsbeth knows from a previous case, who confirms the sliding-scale setup at the clinic. It is at the clinic that the team's attention to one performer on the tape who keeps looking up - a swing who filmed his own turn on a phone propped somewhere he should not have been able to see - converts a dead-end alibi into proof, and Rob's return becomes the quiet link between two seasons of the show's choreography obsession.
Both of his episodes are about work and what it is worth: a wedding choreographer whose craft makes him a suspect in Season 1, and a familiar face confirming a sliding-scale clinic's worth to its neighborhood in Season 3 - in each case the work itself is honest, and it is the people around it who turn a case.
He is also one of the show's cleanest examples of how its world remembers: no apology scene, no explanation - just an investigator greeting a familiar face from a previous case at a clinic door, two seasons after an improvised dance number saved him, the kind of continuity that makes Elsbeth's New York feel lived in.
