When the town faces its first use of 'the box,' he walks the Matthews parents through the punishment and through what happened to the people who were put in it before, and he tells Boyd that there is no version of being sheriff that costs nothing. He pushes hardest exactly when Boyd least wants to be pushed — in the guilt that follows Frank's execution — on the argument that the role is not administrative but spiritual.

He also carries something he does not disclose. He knows where Sara is and has kept that to himself, and a secret from his own past surfaces alongside it.
