Burt Goodman

Burt Goodman runs Optics and Design, one of the severed departments on Lumon's floor, and is the first person from outside Macrodata Refinement to treat Irving with open warmth. Where the severed floor is defined by rules, locked doors and monitored corridors, Burt's department is presented as a place of printed posters and small courtesies, and his manner with Irving is unhurried and genuinely interested, which gives the series one of its few sustained attachments.

The relationship is constrained by the structure around it. Severed employees cannot carry memories between the floor and the outside, so whatever Burt and Irving build exists only in the hours they are allowed to share, and Burt's retirement would end it permanently rather than gradually. Irving's devotion to the handbook and to the idea of Lumon as a moral order puts him at odds with the affection he feels, and Burt's own claims about his life on the floor do not survive scrutiny: when Irving and Dylan press him about what he has told them, the version of Burt that Irving has been holding on to proves incomplete.

Burt's function in the story is to widen the map. Through him the show establishes that the severed floor contains multiple departments with their own cultures and restrictions, and that the company's control extends well beyond one team of four.

Burt Goodman is the head of Lumon's Optics and Design department, a charming and warm figure whose brief encounters with Irving in the hallway spark one of Severance's most tender romances.
